HELP NEEDED recorded delivery problem

Hi
I need some regarding an incident involving my 13 year old son

On the 17th December i was upstairs wrapping presents when the postman came and asked my son to sign for a letter for next door and had some parcels for us too. he did as he thought he was helping.
I was not aware of this and he called to say he was going out with friends, when i came downstairs i noticed a couple of parcels in a basket on the table in amongst some paperwork we were in the middle of sorting out, so i picked up the small parcels knowing what they were and took them upstairs to wrap.

After sorting through the pile of paperwork christmas eve we noticed we had a letter for next door so posted it through the door and didnt think anymore about it
Last week my husband was coming in from work when the neighbour stopped him saying the recorded delivery letter were concert tickets for the 22nd december valued at £180 and he bought them from Ebay and thinking they havnt been sent contacted them and the post office and realised that they had been sent and signed for by my son, he then proceeded to tell him he had no idea that our son had signed for a letter and he will sort it
After coming inside we said as our son is 13 we must be responsible so paid the £180 to them with our sincere apologies
The next day the neighbour who is grateful we paid but still felt bad we were out of pocket said surely they should have posted a card through my door telling me where my recorded delivery was but i didnt get anything plus it shouldnt be right a 13 year old thats not responsible shouldnt be able to sign for something like that
He rang up the post office and they said any age can sign for a recorded delivery (which i think is disgusting as a young child could sign for a parcel with drink in it ) but there should of been a card put through his door stating where his recorded delivery was as its down to the post office to make sure a recorded delivery should get from A to B
Can anyone shed any light on this and tell me who is in the wrong, we have already paid the neighbour as we felt so bad about it
thanks to anyone that can help

Sorry, I cannot help here, though will mention the Ebay Board has a good number of posters with plenty of knowledge on the UK postal system. Especially, Custardy - who's an ex-postie.

Also my sister was saying that she works for a supermarket and they can not let anyone underage to sign for parcels from the postman/delivery man in case it has any drink in there

I dont think it is anything to do with Ebay as they did everything their end but i dont know

thanks for posting elsewhere i need to know for my own peace of mind if nothing else :)
  • I would have thought that it would be up to the ebay seller to take up any complaint as they were the one that was the Royal Mail's customer.

I think that Mrs.W was suggesting you post on the eBay board, because the regulars there have knowledge of how the postal system should work, not simply because it's eBay related.

    I agree with her.

  • Is there any reason why your son didn't just put the letter through your neighbour's letterbox?

  • 13 year old kid. Didn't look at the name on the envelope. Didn't realise it was for next door. Dumped it on the table without looking at it. OP is very decent to have reimbursed the neightbour. 13 year old kid now owes parent for the money.

Postie is an imbecile and a lazy one at that. I'd be taking it up with the PO most vigourously.
  • Im also unclear. Where are the theatre tickets. Did you accidentally wrap them and give them away. Or were they never delivered?

    misguided maybe
this is the problem with varied delivery standard.
many would malign the postie for not leaving the item with a neighbour

where does alchohol come into it?
so what age do you deem someone able to sign for an item?

Its not a straight forward issue.
depending on where you live, you could be part of RMs leave with neighbour trial.
this includes recorded delivery. however the postie should be leaving a card at the recipients address in that scenario
  • The postie should have left your neighbour a card to say it was at your house!
I wish I would take my own advice!
