DMP & Mutual Support Thread - Part 8

  • Chilli made with small pieces of stewing steak rather than mince is a good one for the slow cooker or recently tried a joint of beef with all the other chilli ingredients then flaked the meat into the resulting sauce.

For any fans of Indian food, dhals alone or with small amounts of meat are great and so cheap. Channa is our favourite but any pulses work.

Have got a fantastic recipe for chicken cooked on top of red cabbage, apples, onions and juniper berries and am going to try that one in the slow cooker next week.

Ohh more food for thought. Looking forward to hearing how the chicken goes.

Had to pop out to Aldi and Wilko. Those plastic containers are 6 for 99p. Bought some 25p containers for pulled pork as I'm loving diving in the freezer for a sandwich portion.

  • I've never quite got my head round the slow cooker thing. How is it different from having stuff in the oven for a few hours?

    Lower temperatures and more economical

We have got a slow cooker but also have got a slow cooker setting on the oven too so we often prepare food the night before then put it in the oven first thing on the highest setting for approximately 20 - 30 minutes, then turn it down to the slow cooker setting as we are leaving the house. Pretty much the same as you need to do with a slow cooker.

I can't tell the difference in taste or electricity bills between the two. The only thing I would always cook in the slow cooker rather than the oven setting is soup.

Give it a go BR :)

    Thanks hon,

Our cooker is gas, and quite old, so we have no settings like that, but as I'm in all day, most days, it's no hardship to stick stuff in a pot and then in the oven for a few hours.
not sure I could justify the cost to Mr BR for a slow cooker.

Hi all hope everyone is well, we are still on the rollercoster! Car failed MOT yesterday and needs a fair bit of work about £500, I have emailed CCCS to see if we can make our first payment in December rather than next month as its our only hope, no car and hubby cant get to work, are they usually sympathetic to such requests?

Yes they are, I delayed my first payment until a month later. Good luck!
