Hi all, this is my first ever post on this site though I have been checking in on an almost daily basis since day 1.

I decided to post now as I have just received some devastating news. Having gone through the most convuluted recruitment process I was finally offered a job. I had made it clear from the interview onwards that I could only work on a part time basis yet despite this I was offered a full time post (Glasgow & ED). I asked about pt working and was told there was no chance. I asked about working a compressed week, again no chance. To add insult to injury I was given 1 hour to decide. I turned it down.

I appreciate that many of you will have little sympathy for my plight but believe me if I could work full time I would.

I'd be grateful to hear from those who have suffered a similar fate and to know of any route I can take to challenge the 'take it or leave it' approach.

    Thanks
  • Hi, I'm employed in that district just now, and although all jobs are advertised as flexible, staff already working there have difficult enough times trying to go part time, I myself was refused compressed hours. I'm sorry to hear that after such a lengthy process you had to turn it down. I'm really not surprised they said no though.
  • I might also add, I applied in january, was interviewed in February, got my feedback in march (31), offer in April, called last Monday to give me a start date of 11th June in my own office! What a long drawn out process to effectively be doing the same job, with the same line
    manager, at the same desk!!
Good luck to those still waiting ( also, anyone who has been offered Glasgow and east Dunbartonshire district, what offices have you been offered?)

Thanks for your reply. Whilst i now accept that there are no AWP vacancies, perhaps they could have made this clearer from the off. The vacancy states that alternative working patterns ARE available. At interview they told me that alternative working patterns WERE available, and when i completed my questionnaire i made it clear that i could only work a max of 4 days per week, yet today I'm offered a ft post and told that no part time or compressed vacancies ever existed.

It is soul destroying to have come this far and to have my hopes built up only to then have them demolished in an hour.

    Hi Kc1407

I just wanted to say that I thoroughly sympathise with your predicament and I find it extremely disappointing for you that they weren't able to accommodate your request. You are right, they did advertise AWP and from your perspective you were open and transparent with them from the outset, by clearly stating what you were able to work.

To reinforce the message you received at interview, I also clarified for myself at interview, and subsequently with an advisor on the recruitment help line, that AWP were available. Both sources confirmed yes. (Unfortunately it didn't transpire to be an issue for me as I didn't get an offer with a score of 41/45 and 97% ... reserve list only for me!).

However, as you were successful in achieving an offer, I personally would look into appealing the decision. To summarise, as we all know, it's been a long, time consuming process. You were made an offer. You had made it clear what you could work. They advertised AWP. Therefore I feel it's time they starting operating with transparency, clarity and a sense of urgency!!

Good luck in whatever you decide xx
