It's sad and exciting at the same time to see JCP vacancies pop up because on the one hand there's a possibility of securing employment and on the other hand, you know you're getting hired because the job market is so dire that more staff are needed to interview more unemployed people.

I'm not looking forward to doing a paper test (if that is believed to be the case), I always hated classroom exams but waiting to see (like others) if I get past this current hurdle.

    Negative :]

I wonder if that's a consequence of because it's at the Job centre, or just because these days so few Civil Service jobs actually get to stage 4 (external recruitment)? Or just because of the sheer number of positions available? Surely there can't be that many people waiting to jump on Civil Service jobs?

All Job centre recruitment for the last 3 years has been 'stage 4' as you like to put it - there has not been an internal excercise in about 4 years.

And your job description of an AO is not even close, what your source ?.

A junior store manager has more responsibility than an AO, wages are not an indication of comparable levels of resposibility Im afraid.

I applied for 12 posts internally so I would beg to differ.

I guess a more accurate statement would be all large scale Job centre recruitment for the last 3 years has been 'stage 4'.
  • Can you provide more details , I assumed you applied in london...?

Between 2009-2010, there were a limited number at EO and HEO grades and whilst I was on a FTA contract. I was successful with the HEO role at interview however before a start date was given the spending review meant that they put the post on hold and I assume it was later filled by surplus staff.

Coincidentally I was looking at my old competency statements on the applications this evening.
  • Thanks for the info thats interesting to know, london has a very poor retention of staff which would require an immediate solution an internal excersise would provide.
  • That's what I thought at first, the screen layout was split in 2 A6 sections you could call it but I doubt there was info missing off...

No it was definitely missing, even my 75 min on screen timer didn't move! Called the recruitment line this morning to explain & person I spoke to said 'I wouldn't worry, u passed the test anyway' lol. So I'm not so annoyed now! :)

My observation in London was that most of the EO and above grades were non-graduates (with the exception of FTA contracts) and had been in the job many years. With the AO's it was the same with most FTA staff being graduates and often with many years of private sector experience.

So I am definitely not convinced that an internal exercise is beneficial as I found that the FTA staff were more adaptable, had more up to date knowledge (within 6 months of being in the job), had a far better understanding of both the local and national labour market and had a better work ethic.

An example would be long standing EO's doing 6-7 interviews a day in the worst case and 12 at the average, yet new FTA/Perm EO's doing up to 35 PA interviews.

Most the newly recruited FTA/Perm staff though either wanted to stay in the job for as long as possible to build up experience and progress in the civil service (the more recent graduates) or viewed it as a stop gap whilst looking for something better and I would say of the latter group the majority are still looking but finding it hard in terms of salary progression.

Many of the more recent graduates however have left after better opportunities have come up when its become apparent that your opportunity to progress internally is severely hampered and you are forced to look at other civil service departments.

    Zoikes!

Seems DWP jobs are popular with MSE, or perhaps there's just no-one else that recruits nationally in such big numbers.

Except companies like ASDA's etc....................... which recently announced they would be hiring 5000 staff.
