  • I'm a little intrigued that they'd sift that low. The test wasn't difficult - would they really rather take on low scorers who followed their writing format than high scorers who may not have done? Doesn't that rather defeat the object?

    Hi SpiralGalaxy

The competencies should demonstrate that we show the right indicators/qualities to do job its not all about how good at maths an applicant is im sure DWP prefer candidates having the right skills for the advertised post. I got a good score in this excersise - in no way did I find it easy and I would never say it wasn't difficult.. Personally Id rather take on someone who could demonstrate that they could actually do the job - not show me how well they can do in an online test.

That's the point I was trying to make as well.

They could be favouring good scenario writers at the expense of fairly basic numeracy and comprehension skills.

Hey, I can write a scenario. I'd have tried to blow their socks off with a scenario, if if had been made more explicit that they had a very rigid format in place. Because I've done Psychology, I have loosely adhered to their format (because I know what a competency is), but competencies should never be used at the exclusion of a good general ability to do the job tasks and make sound interpersonal and business decisions, which is what the test itself is designed to measure, presumably.

I understand that they find it important, but once you sift that low for that purpose, surely you are cutting off your nose to spite your face. If the competencies are of a much poorer standard than is usual, they need to look at the process, rather than sifting down to the lower ability levels in order to ratify that process. My two cents.

Because they might up the competency based on evidence from the other examples.

But its up and scored, how would we know if they'd done that - I've not been given an 'overall score', would that have something to do with it?

Must say I'm very confused and have pretty much given up all hope, even though I've not been sift scored yet for the other area I applied for.:(

my son's applied for South Yorkshire, still no update for him or several of my colleagues, but one or two people have had results, seems to be really random the way they are being done. (Don't know why I'm surprised as I've worked in the department long enough to know they never do anything in a logical manner!)

My application for East Scotland has gone 'On hold' today.

My last name starts with B

It does seem pointless to have an entrance test to ensure a basic level of intelligence and common sense, for them to then completely disregard it and base all on competency replies. (If the 36% passrate latest is true)
Some people got a lot of help and coaching on what to write and others really struggled (me!) and it is already apparent there is huge discrepancies in the marking which isn't fair.

Hopefully not much longer to find out either way for me..

We were told at our place (in civil service) that we had to do application in our own time, only to find out another office manager was not only allowing their staff to do it in works time but were sitting with them while they went through it!! :/
  • Well there is no definite answer ,36% test score and great competencies or 98% score with poor competecies.

To me, the online test was easy but lot of room to cheat, however , competecies were difficult and less chances to cheat as the interview means to rectify the same person wrote the competencies and there is no further paper test for judging online test. But again many people did not follow star method and many others did not achieve better results on online test. Though they can do customer advice job properly, may be not a management job( online test designed for manager)

I think it's fair to see the application overall, both scores to get the mean average.
