Yeah the ego will use every trick in the book to veer you away. Of course it wants to keep you safe and within your comfort zone so although the principles are simple, they are not necessarily easy, that is why it takes practice and the support of others.
You're absolutely right! I have been reading books about the ego recently and they are very interesting and definitely ring true to me. Ego identification can explain a lot of the world's problems, from war to smaller things like jealousy and anxiety. The ego is always comparing and fearing, and is never satisfied with what is here and now, it always wants more. It's a very interesting topic and one which isn't often talked about.0 -

That souns just like me hun, and I even have imaginary rows in my head with peeps who are bugging me:(:(Plus the panic and palpitations too:(:(I have been doing the mindfulnes body scans at the mo, and have found them to have helped with the panic, but had a major crying do last night, and OH was fab:o:o
Awww (((HUGS)))
I also have imaginary rows in my head: about conversations I've had in the past and ones I foresee happening in the future, but which have not yet happened. I'm so glad the body scans are helping, have you tried doing a 3 minute breathing space when you feel panicked? It's great your OH is supportive. Mine is too, although he's such a secure and chilled out person that I don't think he fully understands why certain things bother me so much, not that I'd want him too. Things will get better, for you, just be kind to yourself.0 -

Yea have been looking at the 3 min breathing idea, n that's fab too:D:DMy OH is a very stoical person, and hates to see me like this, but is as helpful as any bloke can be I suppose lol:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I will tell him you said that :rotfl::rotfl:“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” Eckhart Tolle0 -
Glad the links were useful
It's funny what you take from books you haven't read in a while. I have been re-reading elements of Dr Paul Gilbert's The Compassionate Mind again, and it has plenty of similiarities, worth a read if people have time.
I've also been reading Help for the Helper (Barbette Rothschild) as part of my literature review for my MA, I think it's really useful for anyone working with people in any of the 'helping professions', particularly in understanding the psycho-physiology of compassion fatigue, vicarious, trauma etc etc. It has a few useful chapters at the back with really practical skills around self-care really.0 -

Hi Rachel,
I have The Compassionate Mind but haven't yet got round to reading it: it's pretty hefty! I have Barbette Rothschild's book The Body Remembers (which I used during my masters!). I found it very interesting. If anyone is interested in the ego, I am reading a book called Born to be Free by Jac O'Keefe which about freeing yourself from the ego and returning to your true self, free from conditioning. It's a very interesting read.0 -
