o2 have sent out extra vouchers - but want me to send them back

As part of a Christmas promotion o2 offerred £20 worth of vouchers with a purchase of some of their smartphones.

These had to be claimed through their site and they were then sent out in the post.

After receiving the £20 worth of vouchers some people have received extra vouchers. Like double etc

o2 have realised their mistake and have sent out texts and being calling customers to return the vouchers to a freepost address.

What though are customers rights or possible penalties if they dont return them? I mean who wants to go out of their way to return something that isn't theirs at their own cost? Are there any rules on this type of thing?

All help appreciated.

At what cost? They've offered you a freepost address, so where's the cost? And I guess like most people you walk past a post box at some point in your life?

Just stick them in the post and forget about it. Its an error, they've realised it.

Presumably you could just bin/shred them insead of wasting your own time/energy/envelope returning them.

People shouldn't have received them so they should post them back. It's not going to cost them anything if it is a freepost address.

If they keep them then thats dishonest and may stop O2 doing such good offers in the future?

It's a mistake, as Jon says there is no cost to you other than going to a post box and dropping them in.

You've been notified it's a mistake so keeping them otherwise would probably judged as theft, using them after you've been told they are not yours is probably fraud too.

Thanks for your responses guys. Dont think I could live with keeping them anyway as they werent intended for me - would always come back around and haunt me. No doubt a lot of those who did get them will keep them - but theres probably a chance they will get charged for them if they do. I think though when posting back it will be a case of going to the post office to obtain proof of posting - be a right hoo-har if they were returned but never received and then they charged you for the unreturned vouchers!

Anyone have the return address i deleted the text?
  • The address is.....

    Freepost
    Licence RSBR-UGJS-BXAY
    4 MERLIN WAY
    ILKESTON
    DERBY
    DE7 4RA

I got this e-mail also - although I have not recieved my vouchers yet in the post. I am not actually a o2 customer - as I left them a few years back - after I made a mistake when I was in the states - and my phone in my handbag pressed against something and I made an international mobile connection to mobile in the UK.....and had a huge bill when i landed back home.... o2 were not too helpful with my mistake.... so i will be in no hurry in recifiying theirs!!

I bought their smartphone - unlocked it - and switched to another network!

I must agree with your comment about their (o2) mistakes verses a customers mistake.

Shoes on the other foot now...
  • Surely it's O2's own responsibility and mistake that they sent out extra vouchers. I personally wouldn't even bother sending them back.
  • Im only sending £100 back and keeping the other £260
