I made a sweet & sour red cabbage for our Yule meal and added fresh cranberries, diced apple and sliced red onion and it was delish! I still have two tubs of it in the freezer :D

The trick is to slice the red cabbage quite thinly so you end up with a chutney type consistency, otherwise it stays quite crunchy (unless you like it like that) and add red wine vinegar, cider vinegar (I used cider), brown sugar, nutmeg and a pinch of salt then simmer for half an hour or so on the hob, adding a little water if necessary, until cooked.

hmmmmm... i tried cooking a red cabbage the other day and it smells VILE i haven't been brave enough to try and eat it yet :(
I shredded it finely put it in the slow cooker layered with appled, added a dash of white wine vinegar (had no red wine vinegar) a dollop of muscavado sugar and a bit of water and cooked it all day on low.
The house stank of vinegar for two days and my bloke has the hump :(
It smells very vinegary in the tub, do you think if i drain the juice off and add some more sugar to it when i heat it through it might be alright? I am very disappointed cos i love red cabbage and i was really looking forward to it tonight with my chops :(

I've just found a jar of pickled red cabbage at the back of my shelf, left over from christmas.

Apart from on sandwiches and salads, is there anything else I can do with it?

  • I agree with Joanna'smum - I have it with scouse - but it is also very nice with Steak pie and chips and on cheese sandwiches. I've just noticed that Joannasmum lives near me!! Never seen any OSers in my area before!!

I always put a chopped cooking apple in the red cabbage itself, and half a teaspoon of caraway seeds - delicious!
