Purple or Blue Debit card with Natwest Select A/C ?

Hello stclair, can you please confirm if having basic/old step account causes decline to any credit applications? I have banked with Natwest for over 4 years with my salary being paid in account for last 3 years. I opened current plus now select silver account last January and went to branch to close my step account around June but for some reason it wasn't closed and it still shows up on my online banking.
Reason I ask this is I always get declined for any credit application, even for an overdraft of £50 without even a credit search. My credit rating is quite good. I have just recently got 2 credit cards with combined limit of £9,000 and Halifax has just gave me an overdraft of £2,000. Also been approved for mortgage by Nationwide and Halifax.
I am really contemplating closing my Natwest accounts. I have their basic, current plus, isa, esavings and first reserve. Also have Natwest's platinum mastercard. Although I had to appeal for it as I was rejected first.
Do you think I should try to go to branch and speak to someone before I close accounts. I have always liked Natwest for their customer service and superb online banking.0 -
I take it you also have a full service current account with Halifax? Funded?... I always get declined for any credit application, even for an overdraft of £50 without even a credit search. Why not use that as your salary account and keep the Select and/or Basic account as a cash account? I agree that Natwest online banking is good but Halifax on the Lloyds platform is quite useable. I also think the Customer Service has improved while Natwest's has declined.
Arrange your exit first.Do you think I should try to go to branch and speak to someone before I close accounts0 -

My understanding is accounts upgraded from a step/ basic or select silver restricted accounts will not get a purple debit to start with they need to run the upgraded account for 6 months.
But hey let them look into it for you and see what happens.
The frausting thing is I know the persons name they need to speak to regarding your query. I have emailed them in general however it appears they are on holiday.
Personally I would not let 4 people look into the query just let one otherwise there is going to be some cross wires when they all come back with slightly different answers.
Thanks again for your response and thanks for trying to help with the email you sent. Unfortunately my branch couldn't help me again, they just can't see any problem after investigating for a week and all they could do was refer it back to the complaints department to be looked into again. Well they said they had refered it but they never did. Again a fail for the branch. I have given up now and have just accepted what I have. God help the next person who asks to upgrade my account though :rotfl:0 -

The branch manager who sorted my problem out told me that an account status will never change from a no-credit status. Which was why he reckoned the only way to get me a cheque book and full purple debit card was to do a new account opening. Even if that came back as no-credit status it can be appealed by the branch staff, but there is no way to appeal an existing account.
It worked for me, so maybe he was talking sense.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
