Hi, my son had to contact the job centre to sign on - he was on hold on and off, the call cost me £1.67 dosent seem alot but some people couldnt afford to pay - why aren't these numbers free.

Take it out of his board/JSA.
D70How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?0 -
Then how does a claimant browse the job vacancies in the jobcentre if they can't get in to use the machines? Anyone can enter a jobcentre and browse the terminals.
They be told to use the internet or phone jobcentreplus. The terminals are for people waiting to sign or for appointment.
So many job centre's have been closed over the years (Many towns no longer have a job centre), The current ones are unable to cope with the number of people claiming. Job centre's are still being closed now, My nearest town lost its jobcentre in 04, Now it's claimants have to travel over 20 miles to the nearest jobcentre.0 -
board /JSA come on give him a break, I'm not blaming him, if he knew about this he would probably offer to pay, but thats not my point. Anyway I just think with the Job situation you need as much support as you can get. The government have no idea what these youngsters have to go through. They expect their familys to support them, but it comes to a point were they (the government) have to wake up to the situation.0

Job centres are only closing because the staff in the early years treat customers like S.... they had no idea what it was like to be out of work. Now the shoes on the other foot. The people who brought this on have now probably retired, in the first place they should have had respect for the people signing on. I'm older now I saw it coming.0

Back to the question - I assume the call was made from a mobile instead of a landline, mobiles generally charge higher to call 08xx numbers than landlines, and it is down to the mobile contract holder to know what it costs them to use their phone. JC+ can't be held responsible for that, they can't know what contracts each caller is on, etc. Maybe it is just lesson learnt for your son - know his contract and choose accordingly (JC+ didn't see a penny of that £1.67, nor would they have seen a penny of the 30p or so the call would have cost from a landline)0

Never had any problems in Cardiff, they would ask if you had an appointment and tick you off if you did, but if you wanted something else they would simply point you in the right direction. Or at least that's how they treated me when I had cause to go there. If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0 -
You can apply for JSA first appt on the internet. You can also browse their jobs on the internet.
You can also browse hundreds of other jobs through other sites on the internet. You dont need to call that number.0 -
JC+ can be held responsible for using for using a premium rate number for accessing their services. What is wrong with a geographic number, I can call one of those for 5p for as long as I want plus they are included in the inclusive contract minutes. There is no excuse for the use of a premium rate number. 0844 numbers are revenue sharing so JC+ did make money from the call, possibly up to 2.5p per minute.Back to the question - I assume the call was made from a mobile instead of a landline, mobiles generally charge higher to call 08xx numbers than landlines, and it is down to the mobile contract holder to know what it costs them to use their phone.
