Hi, my son had to contact the job centre to sign on - he was on hold on and off, the call cost me £1.67 dosent seem alot but some people couldnt afford to pay - why aren't these numbers free.

You could use say no to 0870 to find a cheaper number if there is 1.0

It is about 5p/minute from a BT landline.
 Isn't that reasonable?
If it was free, who would you expect to pay for the call if it isn't the caller?British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0

            I tried dontpaytocall.com - no number0

I see your point but we live near the centre but hes not allowed to just walk in to make an appointment - it has to be by phone - they could have made this easier for him0

Just think the job centres could help out more, he has just been paid off and willing to work and abided by their rules - the lad needs a break. I also think if they are going to put you on hold they should ring you back, he only rang to ask for an appointment to sign.0

I'm sure the number was definitely free at some point last year..
I expect they have withdrawn the free number to save more revenue.0

Jobcentres used to have a phone in them with a direct line through to the call centre, so he could call in and make the appointment, via phone, for free0

You find now. That the unformed heavy on door will not let anyone in unless they have a appointment. Or are to sign on (And then only if they produce their signing card)Jobcentres used to have a phone in them with a direct line through to the call centre, so he could call in and make the appointment, via phone, for free0

Then how does a claimant browse the job vacancies in the jobcentre if they can't get in to use the machines? Anyone can enter a jobcentre and browse the terminals.The_ICT_Engineer wrote: »You find now. That the unformed heavy on door will not let anyone in unless they have a appointment.
