I enjoy the fact that a man who claims he is educated references homer Simpson and hyacythn bucket to defend a weak position. Could you get more low brow?
LOL, that one went right over your head, didn't it?
Macdonalds is a restaurant, accept you're wrong and move on :)

Goater, you have to realise that many words mean different things to different people. To young children, Macdonalds may seem similar to a restaurant. To chavs who have never been to a real restaurant with waiters and cutlery, similarly.

But to normal people of even the most basic level of sophistication it is quite clearly something quite different.

Just a quick question for you: How do YOU differentiate a restaurant and a cafe?

I know you're talking to Goater but here's my way of distinguishing a restaurant and a cafe.

If I go to a cafe I expect to be in, served and out in a lot less than half an hour. Snacks like burgers, items on toast, baguettes, pannini etc.

If I go to a restaurant I expect to be there for 2 to 3 hours - sometimes 3 courses but def 2 courses.
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

    Peace, love and labradors!

I don't. I refer to places by their name. For instance I would say 'I'm off to northcote manor" or "I am off to macdonalds". I would never say "I'm off to a restaurant". The line between cafe's and restaurants is too blurred these days to be a recognisable division. Some cafe's I have been to in Manchester are far superior to restaurants, like for instance macdonalds. This belief that restaurants have to be fine highbrow establishments is very 1980's thinking....

Some restaurants do a lunchtime all you can eat buffet where you can be in and out in less than an hour? Would you therefore class that as not a restaurant?

I don't want to seem rude, goater, but I feel that you simply don't have the linguistic sophistication to understand the argument. Everyone who does seems to be able to agree that there are certain attributes that separate a restaurant from a cafe. Things such as waiters, tablecloths, cutlery, a wine list, etc.

You, on the other hand, seem incapable of making any such distinction and just keep parroting the McDonald's line that their very basic cafes are 'restaurants'. Of course, you are perfectly free to believe that if you wish but you should realise that you are in a very small minority since even most children can, and do, easily make the distinction.

A restaurant is perfectly free to operate in cafe mode if it wishes.

Lol. Absolutely ridiculous. I have been to many cafe's that fit your ridiculous criteria above. Have you never been to a cafe where they have table cloths, cutlery and waitress service? I've even been to licensed cafes.

Cafe's are types of restaurants as are macdonalds. They are not good examples of the genre but that doesn't stop them being restaurants. Frankly you want to stop being such a snob. Thankfully I earn an above average wage and can afford to eat out at nice places, but I would never look down on someone less well off who referred to macdonalds as a restaurant. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I've been to such places. They're called restaurants. :D

Nice try at playing the 'snob' card, but it won't wash, I'm afraid. You can have nice cafes and awful restaurants. But most people intuitively know the difference between the two types of venue. The fact that you don't is sad but I wouldn't let it worry you too much. I'm sure people make allowances for your problems with the English language. ;)

    :rotfl:

This from the person who stated that you could not get any more low brow than Keeping Up Appearances and The Simpsons.

Goater, you really are a hoot!

You may post an awful lot of twaddle but you are superb for entertainment value!
