I think plenty of people feel the same as lotus-eater.. I don't find his statement to be 'crazy'

    Just honest..
I realise a lot of people feel uncomfortable seeing breastfeeding of babies /toddlers. Do you not think that people have a certain craziness in them when they think children drinking the breastmilk of a cow is better than the breast milk of a human? That is the country in which we live. Fortunately not every society is as mad as us.

My OH breast fed all over the place and never had a disgusted comment.

I don't like seeing them as milk delivery methods tbh, you've hit the nail on the head. They are mine and they are my playthings :D And like it or not, I can't see me changing my mind about it now. :p
At least I'm quite normal if "society" thinks the same thing.

I admire your honesty Lotus-eater. but, has it ever occurred to you that nature didnt intend breasts to be male playthings? sorry, but nature intended them to be 'milk delivery systems'!
and your statement that they are 'yours' I find abhorrent too!

A lot of women have problems breastfeeding for whatever reason, milk not coming in etc, why should they be made to feel like they are crazy for feeding their children the breast milk of another animal? It is all down to individual choice or not choice for some people and they shouldn't be made to feel abnormal by the breast feeding brigade, but they are.

I'm pro breast feeding btw, but I find the way it's forced down peoples throats (no pun intended) distasteful at times.

Fortunately for you, you live in one of the least mad society's on earth.
And we don't tell you to stop doing what you want, do we? We just give opinions when asked.

No, not a 'certain craziness'.. I find that a very judgemental statement to make

In our society women have the choice, of that we should be thankful.. and that we live in a country with clean water etc

Personally I beleive breast is best but women who chose not to breastfeed should not be labelled as 'crazy'

Can you not see how patronising and judgmental that is?

It occured to me when my kids were born. Nature can intend whatever she wants, it what you do with them that matters.

Now they're back as mine. :rotfl: and if I like to think like that, then you are going to have to get used to that too. :p Or put me on ignore.

Besides isn't it up to me and my OH how I think about them?

That's not what is said. I said that if the child is fussy and breastfeeding then its nutritional requirements will still be met unlike a fussy child that is surviving off a possibly small or nutritionally inadequate diet.

The same would apply if a child was on follow on milk by bottle. So why differentiate and add the "as nature intended" comment?

I'm sorry that's extrapolating my statement incorrectly. I think it is crazy that we consider feeding the breast milk of another animal as the norm and breastfeeding a human baby with human milk as something that makes people shiver, embarrassed or uncomfortable.

Of course a woman should have alternatives to breastfeeding but breastfeeding should be the norm and the alternatives should be seen as just that.

The question is regarding extended breast feeding I don't know of any mothers that give 2 or 3 year olds follow on milk.

Breastfeeding is the norm, the majority of women in the maternity unit I work in breastfeed

I know because I did a survey as part of my uni course :)

I don't know why some people find it embarressing or uncomfortable but they do. And I think that is their perogative
