I've already had my 2 pence worth in this thread, I really don't care what people do in the privacy of there own home, and I intend to breast feed my baby for as long as possible when he arrives, but I don't think sitting in a restaurant and watching say a 5 year old (who could quite comfortably order off the menu and choose what he wants to eat) breast feed is normal. I understand if it's for "comfort" etc and that's fine, but is there a need for it in public at dinner time?

gilly - I agree - but then every mum who has breastfed in public will have had a 'disgusted' comment aimed at them! comes with the job and the reason is explained by the poster above who refers to his partners breasts as 'his playthings'. and thats the way society sees breasts! they arent delivery methods for providing milk! they are merely sex toys and you wouldnt get your 'buzzy buddy' out in public would you?

Its really no-one elses business.. of course you will find people with lots of different views on this subject

I do know someone who did extended breastfeeding for her son... she was determined she would stop when HE wanted to stop

This did become quite an uncomfortable situation though... when he was 5/6 he still wanted to breastfeed and would ask for the breast in social situations and she began to feel embarressed about it - this may have been from other peoples reactions however

She started to avoid the social situations like parties, bbq's etc.. then she realised that it wasn't really fair as he was missing out and she decided to stop breastfeeding

I'm a pretty back to nature guy :D

But it's just what you are used to, isn't it? We're used to cows milk and not used to seeing toddlers hanging off women's teats.

Men are often strange about it anyway. I felt undeniably jealous that my play things were being used for my kids, when they were breast fed. I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it either.

I'm sorry but I find your choice of language quite disturbing - "women's teats"???? For goodness' sake!
"my play things" is also quite unpleasant...no part of someone else's body should be described as a play thing.

To me, these comments make your attitude infinitely more "weird" than breastfeeding a small child...

My OH breast fed all over the place and never had a disgusted comment.

I don't like seeing them as milk delivery methods tbh, you've hit the nail on the head. They are mine and they are my playthings :D And like it or not, I can't see me changing my mind about it now. :p
At least I'm quite normal if "society" thinks the same thing.

I am usually of a "live and let live" disposition however found myself revolted by the sight of the mother of one of my daughters school friends continuing to breast fed her daughter at 4-5 plus.

The revulsion was because the mum did this any where and everwhere. On visiting us, whilst attending school sports day, out shopping. In being respectful by others of their choices to BF long term, this lady had no care for respect for others in making it a public event and made it more weird than it needed to be.

The little one was fed on demand and had no desire to stop as this was a part of a normal demand of them of their mother .

Because we were asked our opinion...... maybe?

OMG, I'm just thinking about my OH BF our 2 yr old DS now. Sends me into shivers. That's not right. (imho) :D
Now you're just making things up!

And you seem to want an argument for some reason, over peoples opinions.
So you don't think someone breastfeeding a child is abnormal? Why does the thought of a 2 year old breastfeeding send you" into shivers" then?

I don't want to argue. I want people to see the craziness of some of the statements on here.

    They're just opinions, not statements!

And no I don't think it's abnormal, I said I don't like seeing a woman breast feeding an older child.

I'm so sorry that my honest feelings I have admitted on here, upset you so much.
I suggest you get over it.
