No sound on my PC

Have you tried pressing the Fn and F8 button together? This switches the speakers on and off.
Surely this would only apply to a laptop? Assume OP is using a standard UK keyboard.
Reading through all the posts again it does concern me that speakers have not been plugged into the green onboard socket at the rear. However, just for testing purposes headphones can also be plugged in to test for sound. The other thing that hasn't been mentioned is whether the front audio socket has had anything plugged into it to test for sound also.
If this PC has a freshly installed system, have you tried playing any sample music with the inbuilt media player? - after a fresh install the first time you play any music, the player has to be configured.0 -

HDMI high definition speakers. Am I looking in the wrong place then?
OK so no indication of brand e.g. Realtek, Creative, Nvidia, Asus....
Right click on the speaker icon in the playback panel and select properties. What does it say in the General tab for Controller Information and Jack Information?604!0 -
Download, install and run Belarc Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
It will produce a detailed report of your PC in your web browser. About halfway down the right hand side of the report there's a heading 'Multimedia.' Copy/paste that section in to a post here.604!0 -
For the record, the HDMI sound output would almost certainly work (which is probably why he said sound does work). However, as it stands, im 99% sure you still dont have a driver for standard analogue sound which most people use and is a part of what you have paid for. Thats why I personally recommend trying to get those drivers to work that I posted using some form of compatability mode because without them, I dont think your going to get the analogue outputs working
Or send the machine back and let the pc bloke sort it (id be interested to see if he can get it working though. Upto now I did have to give up installing windows 7 on one laptop because I just couldnt get the drivers to work so reverted back to XP. I feel this 'might' be the case here too)
Be interesting to see what Belarc pulls up. I do recommend running that to see what information it gives. I use it myself in these situations.:idea:0 -

They're working! My son suggested we try speakers with a USB connection, as the ones with the green jack that I had tried didn't work. We bought a cheap USB speaker, plugged it in, and SOUND, lovely sound!
I have to thank you all for your efforts to help out, it's really nice to know that there are people out there who can help PC duffers like me in our hour of need! I don't think I helped by expecting to hear sounds if NO speakers were plugged in, but we live and learn.
Once again, thank you all so much x x x2013 NSD challenge 3/100 -
Im curious.
is the USB speaker only connected to the USB port, or does that connect to the green audio output on the computer too?:idea:0 -
He just plugged it into a spare USB port at the back of the computer, the one next to where his wireless router is. There is no connection to the green jack. I didn't expect anything, so to say I was shocked when it worked is an understatement!! What a palarva!2013 NSD challenge 3/100
