No sound on my PC

I bought a reconditioned HP Compaq mini tower DC7800 from Ebay for my son's christmas present (dealer specialises in these things and has 100% feedback). Thing is, there is no sound, either from the internal speaker or if I plug in external speakers.

The audio driver is flagged as working, although I un-installed and re-installed it anyway, the settings aren't on mute or anything daft like that. Has anyone got any suggestions?

I emailed the dealer and he said the sound was tested and working when he sent it to us, so it must be something I've done  I'm not completely computer illiterate, and we haven't done anything that would make the sound not work. My son tells me it never worked from the outset, but he never thought to mention it straight away (he has aspergers syndrome, so sometimes communication doesn't work too well with him).

I've asked the dealer to send me a postage label so that I can send it back to him to sort out, but just wondered if there was anything else I could try?

Thanks in advance

Are the speakers you're plugging in amplified ones?

<Control Panel> - <Device Manager> - <Sound, Video and Game Controllers> (Right Click) - <Properties> check for Drivers. If there are issues, there will be a yellow marker and information that there is a problem. Tell me what it says.

If there is a problem, the Seller's information is irreleavant. Send it back is my advice, ask for a refund.

Unless you are prepared to try solving any problem yourself.

  • or... what speakers are you plugging in? have you plugged in the correct socket? (assuming you have a choice of various coloured ones)

had this on MIL's PC - may not be of any help

right click speaker in lower right side task bar (near clock) - playback devices - right click in a blank area - click show disabled / disconnected devices

    see anything after that?

Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press the 'r' key to open the 'run' dialog.

Type in dxdiag and select OK.

In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool that opens how many Sound tabs do you have?

May I ask how you reinstalled the audio driver?
ie: where did you get it from?

  • alienrik - I re-installed the driver by going into the device manager and clicking on 'update driver'.

I have checked everywhere I can think of, and the sound isn't muted anywhere.

Toxteth o'grady, I did as you suggested and there is one sound tab, it says 'no problems found'.

I think I'll just send it back and ask him to fix it.
