Boo! He can't use those links, he gets an error message - The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware.

Thats why im a little concerned
the pc originally had XP on which is what the drivers are designed for (there are no vista specific ones)

Try this little guide for compatability
    http://www.ehow.com/how_5019442_install-xp-drivers-vista.html

(as a side note. Long time since ive dealt with Vista, but when doing similar for Windows 7 it 'sometimes' asks if it wants to retry using recommended settings which more often than not works)

  • Go into your Control Panel and select 'Sound.'

You will see something like this:

In mine you can see I have a High Definition (HDMI) output from my graphics card which is disabled. My speakers (green/black) are connected to my Realtak onboard audio and are my default sound device.

I also have couple of other digital outs from the Realtek that I don't use.

Please describe exactly what you see in yours.

  • Hmmm..I think I have an HDMI cable somewhere, but as for a monitor with in-built speakers...He has another PC which is an 'all-in-one' which has speakers in the monitor. Would I be able to connect his PC to this one, or is that a dumb idea?

Another stupid question, do I have to plug speakers into this PC to hear sound, or should I be able to hear sound without speakers from the internal speaker?

Or do an Alt + Prt Scr and post image. Next to my devices icons there's a total of just 30 words. Please type what you have word-for-word.

  • I can't copy and paste a picture, but when I look at the playback screen it only shows one entry, the same as your 'speakers' one, apart from the device name is different, ie HMDI etc. It's got the green tick and says 'working' whereas yours says 'default device'

  • It must have more words next to the icon than just 'HDMI'

  • Also when you get chance go back into playback devices, right-click next to the icon you have and make sure 'Show disabled devices' and 'Show disconnected devices' are both checked. If not, select them both. Once selected do you see anything additional in the playback panel?

  • Regarding plugging the speakers into the correct jack, I not even using speakers yet, I'm trying to get the internal speakers to work, then I know the external speakers will work. I did actually test the external speakers on a different PC, and they work fine. There are only two jacks in the back of the PC, one blue and one green. I was using the green one, but tried the blue one for badness. Neither worked.

There are no internal speakers for normal windows sounds on this desktop. The internal speaker is connected directly to the motherboard and is used just to make basic fault code beeps, usually during power on.

  • Just a quick question.

Have you tried pressing the Fn and F8 button together? This switches the speakers on and off.

  • Poppa smurf, no I will try that tomorrow.

TOG - when i go into the playback device all disconnected and disabled devices are both flagged.

Regarding your 'sound' question, all I can see is the name of the audio device which I have already said, ie
HDMI high definition speakers. Am I looking in the wrong place then?
