If the rail companies cut the prices then they simply wouldn't have the capacity to take the extra passengers that would generate and people would complain that they are hanging out the windows or unable to get on the train.

Even at the current rates space is at a premium so they are hardly likely to reduce the revenue stream.

We cant have double deck trains as the wont fit under the bridges that were built all those years ago when double deck trains didnt exist and we cant have longer trains as the platforms at the stations are not long enough and cant be extended due to development around them. There also isnt space on the network for longer trains in order to maintain the separation.

What is your solution to this? Cutting prices wont fix it.

Wow does everybody on this forum work for the train companies lol. I cant believe how much everybody seems to love the rail companies.
  • Once or twice might be absent-mindedness or carelessness or a 'so what' attitude. Continually and deliberately not buying a ticket could be considered a fraudulent action. Take the advice that's been presented here - buy a ticket, and if you can't afford to, don't travel without one.

I have no affiliation with any train company. I am just pointing out that there are wider issues that need to be taken into account and that cutting the prices wont fix the situation, it will just make it worse.

Years and years and years of underfunding and a complete lack of forward planning (and available space to expand) when compared to mainland Europe are the source of the current problems and that isnt going to be fixed overnight.

I can honesly say your answer is terrible.... you are basically saying they charge so much to deter people from using the service due to limited capacity... that is a terrible argument.

I can tell you I start my journey at Canterbury but i am not stupid enough to tell you my destination especially with the tone on this post as it would increase my chances of being caught. Don't worry i will write back tomorrow and let you know what i was told at the station...

    Good luck, please repost tomorrow, but I can guess your reply now, something like;
I got away with it and my plan worked a treat, stupid railway staff didn't know what hit them.
when in reality you paid for a ticket.

True and I won't be able to sleep tonight waiting in anticipation for your reply tomorrow.

I'm not entirely sure you understand the penalty fare system anyway. And I quote, from National Rail:

How much does a Penalty Fare cost?
The penalty is £20 or twice the full single fare from the station where the passenger got on the train to the next station at which the train stops, whichever is the greater.
If the passenger wants to travel beyond the next station, they must also pay the relevant fare from that station to their final destination.

So, if the fare is more than £10 from the station you got on to the next one the train stops at after you were caught, your paying more than £20. And, as quoted, you'll then have to pay the fare from that station to your destination if you want to go any further. Is it really worth the hassle?!

And, no, I don't work for the rail network.

my moral compass would be completely fine in not paying a greedy extortionist rail company over £14 to ride the train for one hour.

We will look forward to hearing how your moral compass reacts to greedy supermarkets who want paying for food, greedy employers who expect you to work and not pay you enough. It's hard to believe you are serious but in case you are I trust the train operators are on the ball and hit you for some fines. Paying those might stop you whining about the train fare and how you "have" to avoid paying it.

Yes, that is what I am saying. If your trains are already full to bursting at peak times when why cut the cost to get more people on them. This shouldn't be a surprise really.
