Another thing to try is check with your local council to see if they do a food cooperative thing. Ours does this and you pay about £2 for a carrier bag of veg.
  • I like frozen veg cooked in a steamer - especially cauli/brocci/parsnips. I find they all go soggy in the saucepan.
I have bought microwave steam bag things, but haven't had the nerve to try them yet.
I know what you mean about fresh veg, best buys are from your local market.

the only fresh veg i use is carrots and onions, i find if i use my slow cooker i get excess water (i find this in general with my slowcooker not just veg i don't think it thickens as much) with anything else i don't notice, i even use frozen veg in quiches and the first time i did it i was convinced it would taste soggy but it didn't

    Thanks everyone.
I am going to start buying frozen as from this week, and see how it goes, and how much cheaper it is.
Does anyone know if you can buy frozen courgette slices/diced?

I've not seen frozen courgette on their own, but they are in those Italian style roast vegetable mixes. Best thing to do is buy them fresh if you see them reduced or when they're in season and slice and freeze them yourself.

Courgettes are one of those vegetables that people often grow because they can be grown in pots and are easy, but then people find that they have far too many courgettes!

Thanks gigervamp, good idea to buy them cheap and freeze them! Might have a look what price they are at the market, in the hopes they are cheaper than the supermarkets.

I use a lot of frozen veg & Lidl's is the cheapest I've found out of the supermarkets & they're a better quality too.The only veg I buy fresh is mushrooms & broccolli.I find tho that you get loads of water leech out from frozen mushrooms & they have a strange rubbery texture when defrosted/cooked so I wouldn't reccomend frozen mushrooms.
  • I am a big fan of certain types of frozen veg for cost and convenience.

In my opinion good frozen veg are: peas, green beans, peppers, sweetcorn and the mashed together swede and carrot

I prefer fresh cabbage, sprouts, carrots and broccoli/cauliflower although the kids love the frozen veg mixes that have a bit of everything in. Never tried frozen mushrooms or courgette.

I never defrost it first and frozen veg is great done in the microwave if you are short of time.

I would suggest that you don't spend loads on buying everything frozen in one go - try a few things and see what you like. I don't mind frozen broccoli and cauli, but my OH hates it - the texture is a bit different to fresh. I do use frozen spinach, broad beans, peas and sprouts these days though, as it is so much more convenient, and I don't have to cook something I don't fancy just because it is going limp at the bottom of the fridge. I also like frozen mash and cauli cheese for quick, easy meals during the week.

I suggest trying one 'single' veg and a mixed veg to start with, topped up with fresh veg. Next time, if those are ok get them again, plus one or two new ones to try. You will soon figure out what you like and what you don't. I also suggest you don't tell the kids it is frozen, and see if they notice the difference - in my experience kids can be funny about changes to food, even if the difference is only slight.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
