So why do you prefer Tivo? i have to decide whether to have V+ or tivo as my basic V box cannot do HD. i have seen a lot of complaints about Tivo today.

What you need to understand is the majority of faults on cable are caused by shoddy installs, the installer not checking the signal levels, the return path slope not adjusted, badly fitted F-connections,damaged cabling.
I have spent a large part of the my employment with NTL/VM up until redundancy fixing faults, usually caused by the above.
You see the majority of VM one man installs are done by contractors & all of the two man installs, they get paid by the job so if they can cram another job in by cutting corners, they will.Depending on where you live in the country & if you are already a VM customer, your best bet is to ask for the job to be given to an 'In-House' installer. They work for VM & are saleried,so do one or six jobs a day, they get paid the same so don't need to rush.Plus they are held to a higher standard of work than the contractors.(Thats what I started out as)

But the 1TB drive one and the budget 500GB are both described as TIVO. Their website also still offers a V+ box but I was told on the phone that there were 2 grades of V+, one which records and one which does not. This is not advertised on the site.

    For new customers there is...

    VHD (no record function)
    Tivo 500gb (record function)
    Tivo 1TB (record function)

The above three are available on the Virgin website right now (http://shop.virginmedia.com/digital-tv/set-top-boxes.html)

For existing customers looking for upgrades and tweaks to bundles retentions can offer a V+ via post - its not generally available to order for everyone.

My retention deal is installed on the 5th of this month - Our VHD box is being removed, and the V+ from downstairs is being moved upstairs with a 1TB Tivo going into the lounge.

Because its got a bigger hard drive than the V+ :rotfl:
apart from that, the rest of the features are a bit ropey at best as youve probably gathered from reading the Tivo forum.

What we have to remember is that people very rarely go on to a forum if they are happy with the service they are getting. My 3 Tivo`s run like a dream and none of the features are ropey at all. My daughter also has Tivo and once again she is very happy with it. Have a look here as well as the forum posted above:)

Exactly,People are more likely to complain than they are to praise, just have a read of these forums.
I think in the last 14 years I've been in the industry, the has only been a handful of customers who have contacted NTL/VM or Sky & praised me for my work ethics.Unfortunatly, the has been 2 who wrote in to complain, one was a false allegation & she was after compensation & the other was when I bent over backwards to do a job as a friends mom who was getting Sky in wanted it done. (thru the loft)
    Since then,by the book!

Well you must be very lucky not to have any issues at all with Tivo,

I have found that very few of the features are problem free,

    to name a few:
You Tube - constantly pauses whilst buffering,
    ebay app - totally useless
On demand content - regularly gives up at some point through program
Audio on HD Channels out of sync
iplayer - better now, but still with problems

Response speed from box is painfully slow

Typical signal level issue, you need a service tech out to check not only the levels but cabling, splitters ect.

I really want TIVO, but the only thing stopping me is the £3 a month. I don't mind one off costs, but I hate increased monthly costs. I've got a year left before my contract is up as well.

The HDD in the V+ is pathetic.

Don`t consider myself lucky at all. My daughter has 1, and has just ordered 2 more to replace her V+ boxes as she is so happy with everything the Tivo does.

But when you renew your contract, there will probably be a £5 a month charge for having a V+. I currently have an old V box which doesn't save programmes and only has scart sockets. I have been investigating upgrades. They are now charging £5 a month for a V+ which saves programmes.
