People not knowing how to use motorways properly.

Anyone travelling faster than 70mph is breaking the law, so by default is the one who does not know how to "use" the motorway.
A lot of people who think they are doing 70 aren't, depending up how accurately their speedometer is.
West Yorkshire have just announced they have now sent 11,000 tickets from the average speed cameras on the M62, they have also warned that many motorist are following an urban myth that you can drive faster than 50mph and be allowed a "tolerance" they say there is no tolerance and if you exceed the maximum speed limit of 50mph you will receive a ticket, 50 mph is a maximum speed.
Nice and safe driving down the motorway looking at the speedometer rather than the road! No issues with average speed cameras when there are roadworks but some tolerance would be safer. I have no desire to speed through a section where these cameras are in place but when you've been doing 70, slow to 50 and have to stick at that speed for several miles it's easy to go a bit faster and not realise. I'm guessing the reason for zero tolerance would be generating revenue rather than road safety as someone studying their speed is far more dangerous than someone doing 55 and actually looking at the road.
Of course a lot of people are idiots and don't understand the word "average".In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
People = plural. However even if you find 100 people who agree with you I still won't discuss it with you. You already know why not. I'm surprised you keep asking. You obviously don't know how stubborn I am. You won't goad me into it however much you try.
Ah I didn't accuse YOU of having an alias but yet you deny it. Fishy. Very fishy.
If in the unlikely event, you actually post something new and interesting tonight I might deign to reply. Until then goodnight.
I knew you would not say why you were driving in the wrong lane as you have not got a valid reason for driving in the wrong lane.
Who did you acuse of having a Alias then?0 -
We still do. The two letters before the year number are the office where the plate was issued. S* 61 ABC are new Scottish plates. L* 61 XYZ are Greater London etc. It can be helpful to spot a local driver sometimes - they may know the "best" (but not necessarily correct) lane to take. When we had number plates that could determine where the car/driver came from ....I need to think of something new here...0 -

Lane 2 is full of CLOGS, which means lane 3 becomes full with people overtaking them. Meanwhile lane 1 is much less busy, but unavailable unless people want to resort to undertaking. The M3 near me is often like this on a weekend.
A far bigger problem is the HGV/LCV drivers who travel side by side for literally miles; the one in the nearside lane won't lift off the gas or flick the CC off to drop back enough for the outer one to overtake; the one in the outer lane really should not be overtaking at all if they cannot execute the manouvre in a reason able time - say 2 minutes.
At least on most motorways the other traffic (except coaches) has the 3rd or 4th lane, on a dual carriageway your stuffed!0 -

I didn't accuse anyone I just randomly said that I had a hunch that there were aliases about. Turns out I was right judging by the "Oh" in post 171. He'll deny it of course. But that doesn't change the reality. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

this was in response to me stupidly asking a rhetorical question - "am i driving dangerously if i undertake" (there was also a context to the whole paragraph by hey, its the internet right?
).
I wanted to add a few salient points direct from the highway code:
The Highway Code
Overtaking (162-169)
163
Overtake only when it is safe and legal to do so. You should- move quickly past the vehicle you are overtaking, once you have started to overtake. Allow plenty of room. Move back to the left as soon as you can but do not cut in
Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.
169
Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass.
and in addition these points:- only overtake on the left if the vehicle in front is signalling to turn right, and there is room to do so
- stay in your lane if traffic is moving slowly in queues. If the queue on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the left
the latter 2 cover my views on undertaking - as far as I am concerned a driver sitting in the middle lane without good reason is "moving slowly in a queue" - or at least thats what I will be telling the next traffic officer that pulls me over for undertaking!!

One of the problems with the highway code is that it is written in the style:philmewagon wrote: »The Highway Code
This is what you should do.
If someone is disobeying the rules you should inconvenience yourself to ensure they can do so safely.
Obviously that is sound and sensible advice but very hard to follow consistently as it's effectively saying: "You must always actively help the bullies and law breakers win".the latter 2 cover my views on undertaking - as far as I am concerned a driver sitting in the middle lane without good reason is "moving slowly in a queue" - or at least thats what I will be telling the next traffic officer that pulls me over for undertaking!!
I have used exactly that rationale, but, I actually perceive undertaking as a very dangerous manoeuvre and have never been able to persuade myself to do it.
Except: on a three lane motorway where someone is hogging the outside lane and there is sufficient distance where both the inside lanes are clear that I can undertake them in the leftmost lane and make two clear, slow, lane changes to put myself in front of them a considerable distance ahead. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
You kind of remind me of someone. <scratches head>
Think his name begins with B.
Commenting on another debate on another thread that the new username wasn't involved in! Dead giveaway old chap. Another schoolboy error. Along with using the oh followed by a comma. Bit of a trademark of yours. :rotfl:
I strongly suggest you pick your battles more carefully.
IMG are my initials.
I refer you to an old thread re:Strangest Books. My name and address were revealed on that thread by Mike Jones. His posts were later deleted and he was arrested on 6th December 2011 for crimes revealed in that thread.
I have no time for your pathetic games.Grow up.0 -

Its not dangerous at all. The middle lane hogger is just going to sit in the middle lane until A) their junction is next
they get flashed

Disagree.
Some of these people - some driving at 34 in a 50 - will move over into the inside lane without either checking or indicating.
Just as I am undertaking...............0
