Sometimes when I am on the Motorway there is an idiot sitting in the outside lane doing 60 while the middle lane is empty. I have waited until there is a gap in the inside lane and go into that to overtake so I am undertaking but with a gap of 1 lane between us. Usually the thickoe doesn't even notice.

I admit I often drive in the middle lane when the left lane is empty. Often the left lane is more heavily used by HGVs and is in rag order and shït state from potholes and other damage, even ruts.

So it's OK for you to drive in the wrong lane, but when someone else does it they are an 'idiot' and 'thickoe'?

Learn to read and get context, when I drive for a short time in the middle lane it is because it is in a section where the heavier vehicles in the inner lane have caused road damage, which I did mention before your selective quotes (often near busy junctions where they may have to brake suddenly on a regular basis) and it doesn't do me or my car any good, I am also driving at or near the speed limit.
I never clog up the outside lane like the “idiots” and “thickoes” I describe. In fact I would say that the middle lane is the correct lane to use when the surface of the road in the inner lane is damaged in this way.

  • This is one thing that pis**s me off! I don't understand the need for people to hog lane 2 and 3 at 50mph. Their should be an offence for this, as it is dangerous driving in my opinion. It also pis**s me off that these people come on here and say they will keep doing it! Why? Its wrong. It shows you can't drive properly.

I've corrected the extremely poor example for you.

A more appropriate question would be:
'Someone is walking down the street, you want to walk faster and the pavements are quiet and very wide, what would you do?....'

    .

on a normal pavement i would walk round them.
However the pavement is not a motorway. There is no high way code for the pavement on you do having a walking instructor to teach you how to use it.
When walking down the street you do not have to keep to the left hand side of the pavement unless going past some one.

On the london underground people keep to one side on the esaclotor depending if standing or walking up or down them. Most people keep to this. Quite a few of the walk ways to the escalotor have a slower / faster lane. FOr the most part people follow the flow of the walking.
if you decide to stand on the wrong side of escalotor during rush hour, I bet quite a few people would be asking you to stand to the other side. Of course this would be bullying if you asked them to do this.

One of the reasons why people stay in the middle lane is very simple - cruise control is on to make the journey more relaxed. Continually changing lanes does not help for a relaxed journey. Not saying staying in the middle lane is right or wrong, just a reason why people do this.

Many, many years ago I was told by an advanced driving instructor to keep lane changing manouvres to a minimum on Motorways, the reasoning being that each move increased the potential for a collision to occur, because whilst you may be concentrating it doesn't follow that all the other drivers around you are. That is why undertaking should NEVER become accepted practice except as already described when in heavy traffic the left side lanes do so to maintain the flow in their particular lane.

One thing everyone seems to be forgetting is that the key to all is concentration and observation, meaning that if someone like the OP catches up behind you, you should be aware of what is happening, and IF SAFE to do so, move over. Of course it also means that the OP should have already worked out there was an obstruction in his current lane, and if safe to do so, pulled out and overtaken the obstruction.

It is the place of the police to enforce or otherwise the provisions of the Road Traffic Act, not individual drivers. Actions or reactions by normal drivers that are either aggressive, demonstrative or plain stupid simply add to the risk of a collision.

Is this a joke post? Have I missed something here? Do laws of the road not apply if you are in cruise control?

This is why middle-lane hoggers annoy me; by mindlessly droning along in the middle lane because they think that 70mph is the "middle lane speed", think that the middle lane is the "cruising lane", or are just too darn stupid to be on the road, I am having to make additional manoeuvres - from left lane to centre lane to right lane to center lane, and back to left lane - in order to overtake.

I suggest it is you who needs to learn to read. I fully quoted two of your posts, so perhaps you can explain how I selectively quoted them? :rotfl:

At the same time as learning to read, you could try learning to drive properly. Middle lane drivers like you force other drivers into the outside lane to overtake, when otherwise they'd be able to do so in the middle and you in the inside. You leave an empty inside lane and cause congestion in the outside lane.

The motorways are not designed with an inside lane for HGVs and outside lanes for cars; all traffic keeps left unless overtaking.
