Hey ladies, just popping over from the pregnancy thread. Have a question for you. What is your opinion on the nct classes vs the nhs? My oh is dead set against the nct, his view is why pay for something which is free on the nhs. I know it's expensive at £245 but I was quite keen especially for the breastfeeding class and the social side of it.
TIA

Hi Bezzy, I can't comment on the content of the actual classes as we didn't do it, but I have found that at pretty much all the baby groups I've been to there are groups of mums that met through the nct antenatal sessions and kept in touch. We still wouldn't have been able to afford it but I think I might have thought more carefully about it as until recently I have felt quite isolated. If you decide not to do it and are still looking for local mums to get to know try the netmums website, I've made a really good friend that I meet up with regularly on there. Hope that helps a bit, bit of a ramble I'm afraid!Newborn thread member

One thing I do, the minute the sleepsuits get too small, feet don't fit, I just cut the feet off them, especially now as its a bit warmer. Charity shops for toys and clothes, they excellent, especially the ones dedicated to kids stuff. Don't bother with baby bath etc, hubby just bathed with Charlie each night, hardly used ours, or our bath support. Oh, and till Charlie was at least 3 months, he lived in his sleepsuits. If i had to do it again (), i'd probably buy max 3 outfits, no more. And when we went out, vest, sleepsuit and cardigan.
And most of all, ask family/friends etc what they have in their loft/leftover, you'd be surprised how much stuff people keep!!
Thanks for the tip!
My LO is a ziggy piggy and is growing waaaaay too fast. I have wasted LOTS of clothes because she just didn't get chance to wear them! I am pondering on whether I can be bothered to sell them on.
We have borrowed lots of things like bath/baby walker (plus I can send them back so they are not littering my loft when we have finished with them).
Do we have any cloth nappy users on here? I have a very small stash of bambino mio solos but I'm by no means kitted out to use them. Still pondering whether it is worth the initial expense now she is 5 months old.
Has anyone been to the asda baby event? I am a bit miffed as I went there specifically to get my 65 wash box of fairy for £10 but they didn't appear to have any
Oh, another bargain I must share is I picked up a cosatto 3sixti highchair this weekend for £90 reduced from originally £150 i think. They price matched it for me in mothercare so I was very pleased with that one.0 -

We didn't do the NCT ones due to the cost (and my OH being against it!), but like Katie said the main benefit seems to be the socialising. Everyone I know who did the NCT classes now meet up regularly with their new mum friends. So I'd say it depends on a couple of things in addition to finances: whether you already have a support network locally (I've stayed in touch with three ladies I met at pregnancy yoga), and what the NHS classes are like where you are. The NHS classes seem to vary a lot from place to place - mine told me everything I needed to know (I think!) and also included a half-day breastfeeding workshop. BF support will also be available in other shapes and forms though through mum and baby groups, the midwives at your hospital etc. so worth checking what's available. I found the NHS classes useful for discovering the facilities and practices at my hospital specifically - the NCT ones wouldn't have done that. I'll stop rambling now - hope this is of some help, and that someone comes along who actually did the NCT classes!0 -
Bezzyk - we did the nct course and would say it was worth every penny twice over. It covered not only the birth but dealing with visitors, housework, the first weeks, getting the home ready etc...
We use cloth nappies vicky, what do you mean by not kitted out?Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck
