We're still on last feed here.
I was talking to a lady a few weeks ago who'd been on a course about weaning. She was a bit dubious about solely baby led weaning, and when she asked, apparently they said a lot of mums start off with it, but end up mixing the two because it took so long to get the baby to eat a decent amount that way. I think i'll probably end up mixing them. After all, I have a free jar and a sachet of something too, not MSE to ignore them. And I must admit, I used to love the powdered fruity stuff with son no1, sometimes it is just easier than making something, and it was yummy!

Providing we can get to 6 months without having to wean earlier (some weight gain issues) I'll probably be doing baby led weaning. Went to a session on weaning at my Sure Start centre the other day and the woman speaking to us was very pro-blw. If you go down the pur!e/mash route apparently there's a relatively small window for getting your LO used to lumps (and if you wait until they're 6 months, food doesn't need to be a completely smooth pur!e anyway) and if you miss the window you can have a bit of a battle on your hands getting them to eat lumpy stuff. However I am by no means an expert in anything. I haven't done this before, that's just what she told us. Amelia is 17 weeks now, I can't believe how quick the time is going and that I'm having to start thinking about all this stuff! One thing I know is that I'm going to do all I can to avoid her being a fussy eater! My OH's sister is a very fussy eater and it's a nightmare having her round for dinner as there's very little she will eat!
Edit - just to add, one of the things I have heard repeated a lot on some blw forums I have been on - "food is for fun until they're one!". So milk is still seen to be the major source of calorie intake until 1 year old. Food is all about learning about different tastes and textures (blw is also supposed to be very messy!) rather than their main source of nutrition. Again, not an expert, just repeating what I've read!:j Debt Free 27.07.2011!! :j0 -
To be honest, I think just do whatever suits you best.
After all, half of us will have been raised on purees, the other half in different ways, and we all eat fairly normally now.
My health visitor was very keen on baby led weaning, and produced a lovely stack of pics of babies munching on various things, including a chinese takeaway! I was horrified at the thought of all that salt, MSG and so on but she seemed to think that was fine as a one off. I was thinking when I did my tomato pasta the other day that it would make good baby food, as it had no salt at all.
I think where it all goes wrong is if you don't follow it through into proper meals. No1 son happily munched through various baby mush, but I didn't give him a wide variety of veg when he moved on to proper meals. He'll eat almost any veg now, but for years he would gag if handed a piece of carrot! But, then he got there in the end. I couldn't have imagined back then that he'd happily eat a sauce with mushrooms, onion, peppers, tomatoes and even courgette in (even if he did think it was cucumber!).0 -

Still so many decisions to make!! :rotfl:
We started off with blw at 6 months, but in reality I also use some pureed food as well. She loves the fruit purees for dessert and I have a supply of hipp organic meals for when out and about or on days when I don't think what we're eating is suitable for her. I've never had a problem mixing the two and she certainly isn't confused by it. She does eat more when fed the fruit purees or meals but that is because she's mostly spoon fed them so doesn't get the chance to play with the food. I'll mostly load her spoon and let her feed herself, but her dad tends to just feed her so she then expects that when she sees the spoon. When we do blw she smells, licks, feels the food etc and will spend ages playing with it and may only eat a little of it (unless it's a piece of chicken or toast in which case she gobbles them up lol) You do need patience to do blw as mealtimes are a lot longer and that's tbh why I resort to traditional weaning sometimes as its just not practical for me to allocate that time for meals.
As someone else said the mantra 'food is fun until one' is worth bearing in mind, they'll be getting all they need from their milk so just let them get on with it and eat as much or as little as they want. Or if you find it's not for you then switch to traditional weaning, or mix them. The two don't have to be mutually exclusive imo, I just go with the flow and do whatever suits us on any given day. I know not everyone agrees with that but it's worked for us:):starmod:C'est la vie:starmod:0 -
Great deal, Ro. My little one loves hers and it's definitely been our best buy. She's 8 and a half months now and has only just moved into the second height setting so we're getting our money's worth out of it. Its been invaluable in letting me get on with things in the house knowing she's safely playing away. Plus it's fab for tiring them out, all that bouncing means naps are more likely afterwards lol Oh and it's also great for making them poo:rotfl::starmod:C'est la vie:starmod:0 -
Yes, I think a mixture of the 2 might be doable. Over a weekend when I've got the time to really get into it, I can try blw. Unfortunately, during the week, I'd basically be getting home from work, picking him up, and having to start bedtime routine
Boo for going back to work!
I've really got to do a lot more reading on it all xDFD February 2012

Theres a lovely blw forum on babyledweaning.com for those that are interested in blw. The blw book is a good read but anti spoonfeeding.
We did nothing but blw with jacob to start with then he figured out that yoghurt comes much quicker if you just shout and open your mouth :-)
The thing i liked about blw most of all is that its not about how much they eat - milk rules
Daddy put jacob to bed all by himself tonight (as i was out) took an hour with lots of tears but he managed it :-)Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck

I wanted to do BLW, but looks like it'l be out for us, at least to start with, because the pediatrician wanted us to wean at 17 weeks, and because Aaron's milk intake isn't great, looks like we will be!The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0
