Advice on rejecting a used car.

I'd want to find out why the mounting point sheared so soon after you started driving the car.
It does suggest that some work was recently done eg. replacing the engine mounts or working on or replacing the engine.0 -
Figures on why you personally are so keen on the op rolling over, and so keen they don't speak to trading standards.
As a trader, surely you'd be clamouring to be proved right, and be pushing them to take the correct route to back up your unbiased advice.
What is the right message.
1) speak to trading standards, they'll tell you the truth
2) don't speak to them, trust a used car dealer on an internet forum?
I have no vested interest in the O/P speaking to trading standard or not. Why should i care? Its not my problem - i'm merely commenting on what i believe would be the least painful way for the o/p to get a satisfactory solution.
As many people have now said in this case the supplying dealer is acting reasonably and there is no indication that they are attempting to shirk their responsibilities or perform a botch job.
Would you agree?0 -

mickey is spot on in SOGA.
I dont think he is. He seems to think that in some way TS will come in, beat the supplying dealer with a stick and the O/P will have their money back by lunchtime tomorrow.
Having actually had experience with TS (as opposed to mickey who has just read about it on the internet) they WILL look at both sides of the issue and also on what the supplying dealer has done / is doing to resolve this.
Even IF they say the supplying dealer should refund (which they wont) all that does is, as you say, open up a world of pain, going through solicitors, courts, etc.
The mature and sensible approach is as you say to allow the work to be done to a preagreed standard and confirm its been done that way subsequently.0 -

Maybe you choose to spend a lot of your time in court as your after sales technique after 24 hours.
Many other dealers would get on with life, refund it, repair it, and flog it on to the next poor sucker as one careful owner.0 -
True. And i'd be surprised if they say anything other than give the dealer the opportunity to repair it.
I think you're setting a false expectation that cant be met by saying otherwise.
Under what circumstances do you think a car can be rejected under the SOGA then?
I don't know enough about cars to know whether it's serious or not, but if it is as significant as it sounds, then it's a fault that showed up within hours of purchase. A retailer wouldn't be given the opportunity to repair any other goods in this situation, so why is a car different?0 -

No i dont. I believe in fairness and i work with my customers to ensure they are happy.

Thats hardly much of a business plan is it? Refund every customer when they have a single problem, then lie to future customers?
Brilliant.0 -

Brilliant.
If "keep the money at any cost" works for you, at least you've restored everyones view of car dealers.
Arthur Daley lives on.
But enough, hopefully the op will keep us updated.0 -
im in the trade also and gave my answer yesterday
the seller will repair it as he has said
if we gave money back on every little fault all you drum bangers of soga would make every second hand car seller with premises go bust then the general public would have to buy their cars from large conglomerates who treat you with disdain or you would go to the underworld that purports to be private sellers
think on0
