I read all this post trying to find ideas but the only conclusion I can come up with is that there's no conclusion! Seems expensive brands work for some, and not for others.. same with cheap brands, so in the end, the best shampoo is the one that works for you. Sadly I haven't found mine yet!!

I also have greasy hair and it really stays clean longer if I try not to wash it very often, but this is something I thought everyone knew.. it's just difficult to do! Conditioner also makes it go greasy much quicker.. sadly the rest of the hair is VERY dry, so I need to use conditioner.

I've always thought a good/nice hair is something you either have or you haven't.. no shampoo or conditioner is going to change that. :)

I wash my hair almost every day, never use conditioner and blowdry and straighten every time I wash it and it is soft and shiny and no breakages. Every hairdresser I use comments on the good condition it is in.

Oh and I colour it every 6 weeks

I go through phases with shampoo...i have greasy, fine, highlighted hair so never know what to buy!!

i like the superdrug own brand ones too, think they are SLS free but don't quote me on that! the one for fine hair is great, does dry it out a bit but def felt thicker! only 99p sometimes as well so worth a try!

my hair was damaged a bit with over bleaching a while ago and i tried expensive conditioners to make it feel better, but the best one to fix it was the aussie 3 minute miracle reconstructor or the colour one which i still use!

Glaswejen...would you recommend the lush shampoo for finer hair? thanks!!

Can't comment on that since my hair is ridiculously thick!
  • Ive tried loads of different types of shampoos and conditioners over the last few years, (premuim, own brand and basic) and have to say that I have never used one that was fabulous, but thats maybe more about my hair than the shampoo!. I have been using head and shoulders for sensitive skin, since my scalp does get very itchy, and that seems to help most.

I have also stopped using conditioner, and actually found my hair looks and feels better. I am interested in trying out shampoo that is SLS free, since that my help my itchy scalp. Will try superdrug.

Try the naked range, all the shampoos are around the £4 mark. You can buy them in boots.

The bodyshop rainforest ones are about £6, but they are always having offers and discount codes posted on here.

I think sometimes people have problems with SLS free shampoos because they are expecting them to be like shampoos they have used before. If you use them properly they work really well though. As long as you concentrate on cleansing the scalp it will work well. This is actually how you should shampoo anyway, rather than rubbing it through the lengths too much as this tangles the hair.

I'm not sure if the superdrug ones are sls free but I'll keep an eye out next time I'm there.

I have fine greasy hair and used to have to wash it every day.

This is what I do now: before I wash it, I rub a little almond oil on my hands ( http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/#/sainsburys-price-comparison/oils_and_vinegar/sainsburys_almond_cooking_oil_250ml.html ) and then rub it into my hair well. Sometime I comb it through as well.
Then I wash my hair once, using a cheap shampoo (e.g. Morrison's own anti-dandruff). Then I rinse it well. And that is all - no conditioner or anything else.

I find that enough oil stays in to act as a conditioner, and because the hair is not stripped of oil, it does not get greasy very quickly. I can leave it for three or four days between washes.

Also, I get better definition and less fly-away hairs. I prefer a textured look.
  • I've got long, coloured hair and I count myself lucky as it grows fast and stands up to a lot of abuse. I've been using Elvive for coloured hair for the last 15 years. I've tried other brands but none of them leave my hair as tangle-free, shiny and in good condition as Elvive. Dove, in particular, left my hair dull and matted.

I would love to use Kerastase but I can't justify the price.

I suppose it's like face creams - does Creme de la Mer work better than an £8 cream? Whenever research is released the extravagant claims don't stand up to scrutiny....

Holland and Barrett do a range of SLS and paraben free products, I've been using their vitamin E shampoo. There are various websites to check on chemicals in beauty products https://www.goodguide.com is one of them. US based, but there are crossovers on well known brands.

Since learning that parabens have been found in breast tumours I've been seriously looking into beauty products ingredients, and not been impressed - some of this stuff can be really harmful.

Dr Bronners castille soap gets amazing reviews. Totally organic, nothing nasty in it whatsoever, and can be used for 18 different things apparently. I tried it as body wash last night and will try it as shampoo later - the peppermint smells lovely and gets you all tingly!!

This is a really interesting thread, but no real conclusion! Everyone is different of course :) I've been using Herbal Essences combined shampoo+conditioner, but over the winter have to hairdrier my hair every morning (as I don't have time to let it drip-dry and wouldn't go out in the cold with wet hair) and it's become quite dry, so I often use another conditioner on top of the Herbal Essences (<3 the Aussie stuff). Can anyone recommend something I could use before hairdrying that would reduce the dryness/frizz without making my hair too greasy?
