I also think expensive shampoo is worth it. I love Tigi Bedhead Brunette Goddess and if you shop around you can get a huge 750ml size for about a tenner which actually works out cheaper/ or not much more expensive than high street shampoos. If I ever run out and use cheap alternatives my hair just doesn't go right - and I have tried a lot. For conditioner I have tried a lot and I really rate the Umberto Giannini (High Street) Moisture Mask - it's in a pot and meant to be used as a treatment but I use it as a conditioner everytime I wash my hair and it's amazing. It's about £6 a tub I think but Boots normally do it on a 3 for 2 offers. I also think you can save money by using a lot less product - with the Tigi shampoo you only really need 1 to 2 pumps depending on hair thickness/length and so a 750ml bottle will last me (and my BF) about 4 months. The conditioner I use only a tiny amount as it spreads so well - and one tub lasts me about 3 months. So overall my costs are quite low (less than £4 a month).

when being MSE i use the tesco coconut shampoo and conditioner which is often less than a pound, its a lovely smell and very gentle, it makes my hair really soft and shiny though i know not all products suit everyones hair the same.

I love "it's raining men" from Lush. I'm blonde and it makes my colour look amazing.

i usually use Kerastase or Redken but am now using Ojon and dont really rate it to be honest think it is very drying and wont be buying it again

I also like the Lidl shampoo for sensitive scalps if looking for something cheap as find this doesnt dry my scalp and leaves my hair shiny

I have very long thick coarse curly hair but I do manage to keep it in golod condition by using a conditioner mask after every shampoo
  • I go back and forth between shampoos normally, but have been using the Superdrug own brand Coconut and Almond shampoo and conditioner for a while now. Normally about £1 per bottle. Leaves hair mega shiny and doesn't strip colour :)
  • What a great thread, thankyou.
My hair is fine, but like straw at the ends! I only had it cut last week, but the ends still feel a bit dry.
I've tried all sorts of brands, and do like Dove and Timote, but whatever after a few hours it all goes it's own way.
Maybe it's an age thing for me!

I like Tigi products but I will use any really. I think as long as you buy the right stuff for your hair type you should get a good result. Its no good buying shampoo for dry hair if you have greasy hair. Also, remember to wash your hair twice, you only need a small amount of shampoo and it really makes a difference, the first wash takes the product off your hair and the second wash cleans the hair. Also unless you buy a conditioning treatment, all conditioners are much of a muchness.

  • I think a lot of the condition of your hair is down to diet and what you do with your hair. I am careful with what I eat, drink plenty of water and I do not colour my hair, use the hairdryer much, etc. I am always complimented on the condition of my hair and at the moment I am using £1 Schwartzkopf Gliss Hair repair with Liquid Keratin (i.e. the same stuff used in the more expensive brands) and matching conditioner that I found at my local pound shop. I used a Schwartzkorpf in Spain and it really was great - hence searching for similar products in the UK. I think because the brand is big in the whole colouring market that their shampoo and conditioners are pretty good..

So - aside from finding the product that works for you, remember to feed your hair from the inside too!
Well lets see - I dip in and out of MSE all the time but I still come back - have done since 2007!!!

I shall also be following this thread with interest as I am never happy with my hair. It just seems to have so many problems: gets greasy at the roots (I have to wash it sooooooo frequently that it is unfunny), is too dry everywhere else, won't grow at all quickly (think I have gained no more than 6 inches in 7 or 8 years) and seems far too frizzy a lot of the time as well. The unfair part is that hairdressers always comment on how damaged my hair is and are amazed when I tell them I have never dyed it, don't swim often, and hardly ever straighten or curl it. I have tried everything from cheap (supermarket own brand) through to expensive (Liz Earle, Aveda...) and I hardly seem to see any difference. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

This is my hair except mine grows fairly quickly. I never knew what type of shampoo to use. I tried expensive ones and cheap ones.

I used to have to wash mine everyday. Every alternate day I started to use Batiste dry shampoo on my roots instead of washing it. I've been doing this over a year and now I only wash it twice a week and just use the Batiste in between. My roots don't get as greasy as I'm not over stimulating them.

I've also started using the Alberto Balsam shampoos and conditioner. 4 for £3 in most supermarkets. Batiste is fairly pricey but its usually on offer somewhere so I stock up then. I can't believe how much better my hair is.

My hairdresser said washing twice is a myth created by the shampoo industry to double sales. You don't wash your clothes twice or use shower gel twice, do you?
