Expensive V Cheap Shampoo/Cond

I cannot use the highly scented shampoos, my head itches like mad.
I never rated Kersat whatever either.
I swap around shampoo wise.
Bought loads of Kevin Murphy(an Oz hairdressers brand) on sale for £2 a bottle when the salon stopped selling it.
Some John Masters again Debenhams was selling off the brand cheap
Bumble and Bumble kit I bought on sale from Space NK.
If you go to your local TKMaxx they will usually have salon sizes of Tigi etc at good prices. Works out much better value than paying £3 for a small bottle you will use up in no time.0 -
I now only ever use a supermarkets own brand and the cheaper the better. My hair is shiny and in great condition as they do not leave any build up and I do not have to rotate them, plus they cost so little
The recommendation was made to me by my hairdresser!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
I have just watched the programme Wonderstuff that was on the TV earlier in the year. On the programme it was suggested it was better to spend money on conditioners rather than shampoos which they said contained largely the same ingredients.0

I had a hairdresser tell me to either buy salon stuff or the cheapest thing you could find as in pound shops or w/e.Thailand 3010/15000 20150

I shall also be following this thread with interest as I am never happy with my hair. It just seems to have so many problems: gets greasy at the roots (I have to wash it sooooooo frequently that it is unfunny), is too dry everywhere else, won't grow at all quickly (think I have gained no more than 6 inches in 7 or 8 years) and seems far too frizzy a lot of the time as well. The unfair part is that hairdressers always comment on how damaged my hair is and are amazed when I tell them I have never dyed it, don't swim often, and hardly ever straighten or curl it. I have tried everything from cheap (supermarket own brand) through to expensive (Liz Earle, Aveda...) and I hardly seem to see any difference. Any recommendations would be appreciated!0

I buy the salon sizes of tigi bed head from tkmaxx (£9.99 for shampoo, £12.99 conditioner) works out much cheaper than the smaller sizes and seems to be very good.0

Surely the condition of your hair is down to diet/health/genetics and how much you use heat on it etc rather than what you slather on and rinse off again almost immediately?
Not meaning to be rude btw - genuine question! I would be interested to know if I'm wrong and why?0 -
They all contain harsh cleansers whether cheap or expensive - I changed to organic ones years ago and couldn't bear to use anything else now. Looking back on what brands I used to buy and what I used to pay sometimes is shocking, it's just good marketing of a bunch of harsh ingredients really!0

Luck and genetics? Maybe.
Diet and health? In my experience, not at all. I've been on a range of diets (from the vegetarian - and by this I mean proper vegetarian, not a pizza and chips type veggie - to the very unhealthy) and been a variety of dress sizes from 10 to 14, and my hair and my skin have never changed in condition. On top of the hair problems I have also had acne since I was 10 (I'm 25) and since nothing I do seems to shift any of the issues with my skin and hair I'm inclined to think it's just bad luck.
HOWEVER, I am considering having one of those really sophisticated allergy/intolerance tests done (think they cost £100+) to see if there is anything I'm consuming or using that might not be helping me. I know it's certainly not a very :money:option but neither is wasting money on tons of products that don't work. Plus I'm just at the end of my tether really.
Like you, though, if anyone does have a theory or explanation that would be good0 -
I use supermarket brand cheap stuff, even smartprice or the like when we've been really skint.
I think it helps that I treat my hair VERY well otherwise - blow dried once every few months (if I've miscalculated on timing and I'm going out, not as part of any routine), no straightening, no dye, brushed gently with a tangle teezer brush, conditioner left to soak in routinely, etc.
I honestly think my hair wouldn't be any better if I used expensive brands - I lived for a while with a relative who ONLY had salon brand stuff she bought, and I tried a few of them over a few months (with her encouragement), none of them made my hair any better or worse really. I think it depends on how you treat your hair and the luck of the draw - my sister wouldn't use anything but the products she buys, so they obviously work for her - perhaps if she used what I do her hair would end up wrecked. I don't think the same thing works for everyone, I guess.
The only time I've ever had problems was when I tried a brand called Fructis (i think), from the supermarket, because I liked the smell - total waste of money because my hair ended up dry and clumpy after a few washes. I ended up throwing it out, which is something I never do, what with good money going to waste.
My favourite, out of all of the supermarket cheap brands, is the Asda apple shampoo and conditioner, for the record.0
