My hairdresser said washing twice is a myth created by the shampoo industry to double sales. You don't wash your clothes twice or use shower gel twice, do you?

Your hairdresser should know better, she should have been taught about the structure of hair and about how products and the environment damage our hair, she will have also been taught that the first wash removes the build up and the second wash cleans the hair, this is also the reason why your hair is washed twice when you go to the salon, if it isn't washed twice I would seriously think about changing my hairdresser if I were you because if she can cut corners by using less shampoo, imagine what she is doing to your hair when she cuts or colours it!

And to be fair, yes I would rewash my clothes if they didn't look or feel clean.

a hairdresser commented on the rubbish condition of my hair.
No vested interest there then! If the condition of your hair is thought to be rubbiish, then the only answer is to cut it off and stop applying heat / chemicals. The new hair should be strong and healthy looking. The tiniest dab of olive oil spread btwn your palms and passed through your hair should be enough to control the frizzies.

  • Try using an SLS free shampoo. Some great brands are Naked, which can be found in boots and superdrug, and the rainforest collection at the body shop. Both of these ranges are half the price of the shampoos you have been buying. If you go for it the brand good things in superdrug and sainsburys do amazing facial care as well.

SLS is a chemical originally made to degrease car engines, nice! It is also the chemical used in clinical studies when they want to give people dermatitis. SLS is cheap so companies use it to bulk out their products, but it is so damaging to your skin and hair, and is very drying.

I've have stopped using products containing SLS for about three months now and my hair is so much better. I used to have really greasy roots and dry ends, but now my hair is shiny and manageable and feels healthy for the first time in ages. I would definitely give it a go for a month and see if it helps.

In answer to the post above, I must say I tried the BS Rainforest shampoos last year when they had some kind of an offer on ( think it was a newspaper voucher) and I was looking at the best value thing to buy. They were on BOGOF or some similar deal at the time, which is the only reason I bought them with the voucher, but I really did not like them at all! Might be worth trying samples first if poss.

I find Dove or Gliss good too. Usually manage to buy when it's on offer for £1. Never had the need to use an expensive shampoo. Use conditioner every other wash or so.

My hair is long and coloured, have to wash it every day because it picks up cooking smells at work. I ususally rough dry it with the hair dryer, use tongs on it sometimes or have it blow dried at the hairdresser and am lucky it stays in great condition. Never had a problem with it as it is very strong, smooth and shiny.

Wish I could say the same about my fingernails which are weak , bendy and split constantly!

I sometimes use baby shampoo when I think my hair needs something gentler. Otherwise I buy what's on offer but never the very cheap shampoos as I think they may be too harsh,

I've been using Tigi Bedhead stuff and I actually don't think the conditioner suits my hair - it weighs it down and gets greasy quickly so I use a cheap Tresemme one instead. I still like the shampoo though. I think if it works for you, then disregard the cost (within budget obviously)

yes i agree..if your hairdresser doesn't wash the hair twice u need to change hairdresser!
I had very dry and thick hair but since using Aussie , my hair has improved such a lot. Even my hairdresser commented on how my hair has improved. She now has a bottle of Aussie in her salon to use when she does my hair as she said its better on my hair than her shampoos, conditioners she buys.
Aussie is regularly on offer , I bought some this week , 3 for £10 at boots so its not expensive.:)

Well I've only ever used one wash and my hair is in great condition. I don't use any product except hairspray twice a week after I straighten it, and I haven't coloured it since 2004. Maybe she was giving me advice on my own hair not hair in general.

And obviously everyone (normal) would re wash their clothes if the weren't coming clean after the first wash but if you always had to wash everything twice then you wouldn't think that was right.

I go through phases with shampoo...i have greasy, fine, highlighted hair so never know what to buy!!

i like the superdrug own brand ones too, think they are SLS free but don't quote me on that! the one for fine hair is great, does dry it out a bit but def felt thicker! only 99p sometimes as well so worth a try!

my hair was damaged a bit with over bleaching a while ago and i tried expensive conditioners to make it feel better, but the best one to fix it was the aussie 3 minute miracle reconstructor or the colour one which i still use!

Glaswejen...would you recommend the lush shampoo for finer hair? thanks!!
  • Moomin, I use the Lush juniper shampoo bar on my fine, greasy hair. It's nothing special but works well enough for me not to feel I need to find something else. Mind you, I do use it interspersed with Paul Mitchell (just cos I want to use up the PM but can't face using it all the time - too harsh).
