Thankyou for the verses, all three made me cry.
We have as a family decided to get another dog when we are ready because of the huge gap without her. As my youngest summed up nicely " a house isn't a home without a dog". We will probably get another rescue dog from the RSPCA in time.
You MSE lot arn't half lovely :ANow thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker

When we had to have our lovely cat Ozzy put to sleep , the vet sent a poem and a letter which I thought was really nice of him. I've found the poem on a cat site , but I think it's just as suited to dogs.
If it should be that I grow weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep.
Then you must do what must be done,
for this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years,
what is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so.
The time has come, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend
and please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see,
the kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
from pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve it must be you
who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years.
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

Reading this thread has filled me up a litte. We took our 11 year old Lab out with the kids yesterday to the park where they were sledding. He was out for about 2/3 hours barking at the snow and chasing snow balls but later at home he couldn't walk and was trembling all over! I wrapped him up in blankets but he was in a right state. This morning he found it really hard to walk and I only took him for a quick totter. He had found his legs by 11 and we went for a 20 min walk. I've just wrapped him up now his gnawing his back left leg as it hurts him. I know it’s a matter of time the problem is he loves the park and his walks but they really take it out of himBut if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more0 -
I'm really sorry to say this notakid, but that's how it started

She also loved her walks, but looking back I realise that they had been getting shorter and shorter,as she was turning round & heading for home. It was only since the weekend though that she struggled getting up on her back legs.
Maybe the cold snow has something to do with your dogs legs as he was out for sometime
I sincerely hope so xxNow thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker
