Thanks everyone for your advice, and see your point on TA. I've booked Ballys north Tower, did wonder about south tower. Its all done now and we can look forward to the trip. Will now have a look for some good eating places. Trouble is I'm vegetarian !!! and I know that's not easy in US, and many other places. Usually settle for omlette if nothing else. Don't suppose Vegas caters for veggies.0

I'm sure I read Wynn / encore cater for veggies at all their restaurants...
Have a search through the last few years threads. Link is on first page. I'm sure a few veggies have been to Vegas
The rest of your roadtrip may not be as straight forward (though I'm sure places will do veggie burgers!)
Here you are: http://www.wynnlasvegas.com/Restaurants/VegetarianDining
I'm sure there will be other (and cheaper) options too0 -

Thanks a lot for this info, very useful to me. Will definitely be going to some of these places. :beer:0 -
CASINOSI drove an automatic for the first time at the start of a 5,000 mile road trip across American in 2010. I literally collected the hire car then drove straight on the freeway, it was terrifying! But after the first few miles it became second nature.0

If you're picking up the car at LAX straight off the plane and then setting of for Vegas, your anxious state will keep you awake and hopefully alert.
Make sure you know the way from the car hire place to the Interstate so either have Sat Nav or maps that your passenger can read
It's when you get on the long boring section through the desert that you may fall asleep
Common sense dicates that you either stop overnight at LAX, then set off in the daylight the following day or drive out of LA for about an hour or so then get your head down for some kip.
Drving an automatic is easy-(must be as the Americans can do it ) and being on the "wrong" side is Ok because so is everyone else, so just go with the flow.
Problems occur when driving on empty roads, stopping, then driving off onto the empty road-on the WRONG side as you have no reference and fall into your "usual" pattern.0 -

Did you actually STOP in any of those places or just drive through
And apart from Tarmac and Gas stations what did you see?0 -
CASINOSYeah! Stopped for 1 or 2 nights in all those places. The scenery when driving was spectacular, so varied. It sucked on the east coast but west of Chicago it was just mind-blowing. Utah, Colorado and Nevada in particular.0

CASINOSDriving an Auto is much easier than a manual..only one foot required, basically stop and go. You can even leave it in D all the time as long as you remember to keep your foot on the brake.
Driving in the US is a doddle as its nearly all straight roads, just remember to drive on the right, give way alternately at a 4 way cross rds, every one does so there is no hassle, you can turn right on red lights at "most" junctions.
BUT LA is busy all the time and it can take a lot longer to get from A to B than you think it should. It can take hours to do a few miles.
I like driving and have a PSV license (double decker buses) so it doesnt fase me but can understand why it might some people. My wife wont drive over there.
Thanks so much for your reassurance, I feel a tiny lil' bit better now.
Im sooooooo glad I decided to stay the night at LAX before picking up the car the next day.
I only have to drive from the airport to a hotel in West Hollywood where I am staying for a couple of nights before driving to Vegas (via the Grand Canyon)
Its mostly the LA driving that's bothering me, but once at the hotel much of what i've planned can be done on the red line train.
