Cat sorry to hear about the reaction your sister gave
but to be honest, if spending time with you on her birthday is that important to her then she should do something just the two of you. If she's got 22 people going then she's likely to only speak to you for about 5 minutes anyway. I'm horrified that she'd rather you were in debt longer because of her extravagence. Say you spend £40 on dinner, then £30 on drink plus £20 taxi or whatever, that's £90 on one night, but it's not just £90 it's £90 + interest. If it were my interest then that'd be £90 + 40% so that's easily £130. If she really loves you then she'd want you to be happy, and if being debt free is how you'll be happy then she should be fine with that. Not everyone can afford to splash the cash left, right, centre. She has to accept people will say no. It sounds like she's younger than you and maybe used to getting her own way. Foot down lady
The difference between this and the holiday is that this is a "want" well not exactly a want but you know what I mean. Whereas Jakes-mum's family neeeed a holiday, esp. with 70hr weeks for jakes-dad.

Thanks for all your responses guys. I just discarded my original post as I don't really want to run my sister down too much in a public forum and there are always 2 sides to every story! I'm also probably blowing it out of proportion as it would only be about £30, but to me it's the principle and I'm not used to spending large amounts on nights out as I don't drink/get taxis.
She just sent me a text explaining her rationale and I've explained mine in a more clear way so I feel like I've expressed myself to her properly now so I will leave it at that.

Hope you make the right decision for you. Having thought about it, I went for lunch with my girl friends the other day and to cut costs I just drank tap water. So if you don't really drink, just pay for your food and drink the tap water that they will probably put in a jug on the table for you all. It's easy for us to say what you should do, but it's your life and you have to do what is right in your circumstanceBecame Mrs Scotland 16.01.16Became homeowners 26.02.16

Evnin all, hope everything's going well on the debt busting trail for every one else. I'm scraping until payday on Monday, then I can pay off a few more pennies from the pile. After a payment on the car loan and the credit card went out, my new total is:
#123 - 1682 / 10762
Really been working hard at my freelancing this month, and took on a fairly big contract for me which should work out at an extra 300 or so after tax and everything else gets squirrelled away. That should be coming through next week to add to the loan repayment savings.DFW - DEBT FREEEEEE!
Total - 10762/10762

Just to add to the sister '30th' debate! My sister is 30 in the summer and wants to go abroad for the weekend! I have to go because my other sister cant go cos she is pregnant (excellent excuse!). God knows how much that will cost me, I reckon £300+. Also she has just booked a bloody spa day for my niece for her 9th (yes you did read that correctly!!!) birthday...thats is setting me back £50. I am just going to have to suck it up and pay for it because the emotional fall out of not doing these things is too much. That money would be much better spent going off my extensive debt (check the totals!) but nevermind, extra ebay/car booting efforts will be required. I will manage it but it is a lot for me/us.

Aww Cat don't envy you at all in that position. Do what's best for you Hun
On other notes I have made 2 cakes tonight for BF to take to work on Friday... They are gonna be Lego bricks! Simple yet very effective! Normally it's my job to buy those icky tray bakes (on expenses of course) but this time decided to be a brilliant girlfriend and make devils food cake and a simple sponge with buttercreamthe joys of working together

OMG what is with people these days...we are in recession! People can hardly pay their heating bills but expect lavish holidays in the sun?! Crazy
Really feel for you Karen! Thank god I have 2 lazy brothers :rotfl: xxxLife is too short not to love what you do.0 -
Morning all!
Hope you're all well.
Cat - hope things settle down with your sister soon.
Karenann - spa day for a 9yr old:eek: and a 30th weekend holiday:eek: don't envy you.
Rosiest - :T:T:T
Poohspals - used to love indoor picnics as a kid
At lunchtime I'm meeting a friend for a Subw*y picnic in the park, as long as it doesn't rain, or it'll be a picnic in her car. I think Sub is over priced for a butty but my friend loves them and it was the only way I could get her out of the house to meet me. She turns into a hermit during school hols :rotfl:
Little cat off to vets tonight but it will be free as we signed up last year for "vaccinations for life". The £70 seemed a lot at the time but as it costs £35 a year for boosters we'll break even next year. Payday tomorrow, oh I'm going to bash that credit card :j0 -
So now my sister is upset with me and I've had my brother-in-law saying I should go to her party as she's only 30 once, and my debts aren't going to be paid off this month so what's the difference if I delay it by a bit. Great, now I have lost a friend as well due to money - is it really worth it? Maybe I should suck it up and go after all.
I think I might have been inclined to tell my BIL where to step off :rotfl:. I hope you come to an amicable solution, but sometimes people just dont get what a noose debt is and it does everyone good to have a bit of a bust up to actually understand where others are coming fromPS Does anyone else get itchy fingers when checking their balance.
I have a £69.49 buffer in my account and I want to pay some more debt off but pay day is a week away and daren't spend it! Just incase!
ME!!! im £300 from the overdraft limit and I desperately want to pay it off debt but have to keep reminding myself . . debt on 0%, overdraft costs stupid interest!!karenann76 wrote: »FYI...I had a non guilt inducing night out in a cheap student bar for my thirtieth!!!
My thirtieth was a meal out at the local Harv*ster, with Dh and kids, DD threw up all over the table and I paid. I think my present from them all was a box of chocs if I remember coreectly
