The offer
Just when you thought it couldn't get any cheaper, call1899 is now offering calls to landlines in the UK, Canada and Germany for 0p/minute and this time without any connection charge.
The catch?
Firstly this is a test product only for those already signed up and secondly you have to make the call via your computer.

MSE Andrea:
Edinburghglass has posted a 'sticky' article on cheapest home phone calls, which points to an existing thread on 1899's VOIP. There does not seem much point on this additional thread about 1899's VOIP service!0 -
Paul. This is quite deliberate - it is linked to from the tip and therefore is a new started discussion.

1899 already offer this great deal just by using your own landline to landline connection. Only difference is the 3p connection charge which I will not quibble about after talking to the folks back home in the States for over an hour for only 3p!!!0

it is no longer just open to existing customers anybody can sign up and use VOIPRegards

I tried it a couple of days ago, but beware, although their pricing clearly states that calls to UK mobiles are 2p per minute (for VOIP) the announcement message says 10p and that is what I was charged. I assume that their website is incorrect and that they intended to price it the same as for pstn calls (2p min weekends and 10p at other times). I have emailed them about this, but have not yet heard back.
As far as quality goes, it was not good - delays, echoes etc. Because of this, I, personally, would rather pay 18866 1p and get great line quality.
Skype seems to work much better for me, but is not so cheap for calls to landlines so pay your money and take your choice I guess. To infinity and beyond!0 -
This is fantastic. Just been using it for the past hour. Perfect line quality. The other end can actually hear me better than from my mobile.
I am obivously very excited about this - I often work from many different locations, although all have fast wireless broadband connections. This VoIP thing is perfect. No need to worry about mobile signal issues, cheaper, and looks very cool with customers (I'm a technology consultant - VoIP is still quite new).
Thank you!!!0 -
Oh, and btw, to make it practical I previously had purchased a headset/mic combo from BT shop for £5. I think it must have been from a link from this site in the Quick, Grab it while you can board.
I'm currently searching the net for a good wireless one.0 -
Can someone explain to me what 'voip' is? 1899 sent me an email telling me about this but as i didnt know what it was i deleted it!!0
-
It stands for Voice over IP. 'IP' being the thing that makes the Internet 'work'.
A computer can have speakers and a microphone attached to it, so the idea is you can use your computer to make telephone calls to other people in the world through your computer. The technical inside internals working of it means that really the calls are being transmitted/received over the Internet. Fast broadband connections helps for VoIP to work well.
1899 are offering a service so you can call regular telephone numbers. This is very good for its priced, as many others previously have only been that cheap (free) if you call computer-to-computer.0
