The easy explaination - is VOIP stands for voice over internet protocol - this sends voice as little packets of data. The 1899 VOIP is a small bit of software that can be combined with a headset or mic and speakers to make calls over the net. Its worth trying - allows totally free calls from your PC to a phone. Easy to set up and use.
VOIP is the next big thing - most co's now use VOIP to route calls cheaply - still in its infancy as a consumer product.

Voice Over IP (Internet Protocol). In simple terms, IP is how the Internet works! So basically it is telephone calls made from your computer over the Internet to another computer, or to a real telephone (which is quite new).

Another thought: Theoretically VOIP should work from anywhere in the world (or anywhere on the Internet). I have therefore asked if I can use this service abroad. It would be a cheap way for friends and family to contact me! I'll let you know the response.

If you really want to be picky, the fact that VOIP splits up "voice" into little bits of data is not special. I think PSTN (public switch telephone network, or ordinary telephone) does the same thing once the call has got to the exchange! But nobody cares/knows that this happens on PSTN, so neither does anyone need to care/know/worry about using VOIP technology if they don't know how it works! Just save money.

Slightly off topic - but our old friend PoundLand is selling PC headsets and single ear pieces with mini boom mic for - yes - £1. Ideal if you want to get into VoIP - or any other multimedia application.

Thanks for those explanations I think I understand now. I havent got a mike so i will leave it for now, we dont call abroad that often and 3p connection isnt bad

I recently traveled to the USA and used my VOIP 1899 account to call UK Landlines for free. The quality of the call was generally very good. You can use your account anywhere in the world to call UK landlines for free. The US has free hotspots everywhere, you can practically park in any town or city and connect to a free hotspot and make your call there and then. As I was in the USA I was also able to use the account to call local US numbers at no cost.

I'm currently looking into a normal looking telephone device that I can plug into a network port/socket. My thinking is that if it can be configured to run over 1899, then it would be really good for when I'm actually at my base in the office.

I'm using the 1899 free VOIP service and so far it seems to work great. For those who don't want to use their computer to make the calls, you can buy a VOIP phone (I got one one of these -> http://www.grandstream.com/y-bt100.htm off ebay a few weeks ago for £35).

If you have a dedicated VOIP phone then you just plug into your internet router, and you can make calls when the computer is off (plus the phone has speakerphone, etc). I found the quality through the dedicated telephone is MUCH better than through a PC headset, and much more natural to use.
