The Giving Up/ Cutting Down alcohol support thread - number 11

Hi everyone,
I've been a long time lurcher and never posted before but am so fed up with drinking, times come to stop me thinks.
I drink 1-1.5 bottles of wine a night, dont drink in the day at all but cannot help myself from opening a bottle when I get home. The boyfriend is a moderate drinker, hence the extra half bottle 3-4 times a week. In all honesty I have probably been drinking this way for about 10 years, I feel so shamed writing that :-(
I have a good job which I do very well at, so I am thinking I am a functioning drinker but I seriously want to stop.
Is it better for me to bite the bullet and just stop or do I cut down gradually?? Whats the best way to go around cutting down.
Reading this thread has given me so much courage, hope you can help. J x0 -

Rachel Really glad to hear your mums op went well xxx
Chillired- Welcome to the thread
Its really hard to tell you what do as its such a personal choice. Lots of people on here cut down by pledging an amount of days per month they want to stay Alcohol Free - The lovely shaggy keeps a tally for us. Others cut down by trying not to drink on weeknights or monitoring the units they do drink.
Others (like me) start as cutter downers and realise that they need or want to cut it out of their life completely.
Wishing you lots of luck with your decision x

That's a really good explanation bearacus. And  from me too Chillired. Don't feel bad about admitting the amount you're drinking, you've done the right thing coming here and deciding things have to change is the first step! I've come from exactly the same place myself but now I'm happy with sensible, social drinking mainly at weekends. If I were you I'd plan a first AF day (today, tomorrow?), plan a distraction activity for the evening and go for it!!!! You can build from there. Good Luck.
I've got a fairly social week coming up bearacus, so likely to have wine with meals out a couple of times. May I have just
2 for the SNC please?0 -
Many thanks to Bearacus and Maman,
I did the worse thing possible and looked on the internet about cutting down and so many websites tell you not to just stop drinking as its more damaging. I am ready to stop but am just really scared in case I start having fits etc. I have been a big drinker for a long time, I'm really hoping that someone will tell me that this only applies to really heavy spirit drinkers :-)
Thanks in advance for any advice J x0 -

I was fine going from 1 -1.5 bottles a night to 4 AF days a week but if you're unsure, have a word with your GP.0 -
Thank you so much Maman :-) x0

Can I join you all please..
I had a stupid cringe worthy night last night, which made me realise how stupid I have been
I had about 2 bottles of wine, then walked to my Mums house, had a vodka there, and that's all I remember
From what my Mum says, I walked to the pub - was about 11.
I woke up this morning, key was still in the front door, door not locked obv, I lost my phone(which I then found in the front garden, which I found after I had cancelled the SIM!) Luckily I still had my purse, and I can gather I spent £5, so someone must have put me in a cab.
The thought of what could have happened has really scared me, and I think I needed for this to happen to give me a wake up call.
I am going to try to be AF completely for a month, and see how it goes. My drinking habits in the week vary, usually wine after a stressful day, which is usually all of my 3 day week
I struggle at home as I am on my own with 2 kids, think it's a boredom thing - I am hoping by joining this thread it will motivate me to stay AF
Well, if you managed to read all that, then thanks!
I have read most of the posts on this thread, will start on thread 1 tomorrow0 -
Hi Tracy, I'm a newbie today too :-)
