I'm just about to move house so i am watching my money. i plan on making more regular trips to the gym. Good way to keep me entertained and to pass the time. I think it will stop me buying toys out of boredom and should get fit at the same time ;)

Another NSD for me today so I am doing rather well.

I've got twenty odd watchers on my stuff on eBay too and several bids.

I had a look at my eBay account for last year and I spent quite a lot of money so that is going to stop!

Well done - what did you not buy?:D:D

I have got a new hobby of filling up my basket at shops on-line and then just deleting the lot when I realise I don't want or need it. This is a slow process for me but I will get there with all your help I am sure:).

I'll let you into a little secret. My oh works in a cosmetics manufacturing company. I used to buy in to the BS about beauty products and buying expensive ones, and they are all the same as as much use as each other! He now gives me products he makes (copies of really expensive makes Clinque (£50), Creme De La Mere (£99)) which he makes for pence! Just get the E45!

Am please with myself day 9 and apart from the sewing machine I have brought no "stuff" shopping has been at a minimum :T

keep up the good work guys :A

Have a good luck :) with your new home. We are trying to move for some years. We found that neighbours might change frequently and we cannot predict what they might ask you to do or "what you may need to ask them to do or not to do". But over time we found that certain aspects of property design help to avoid future difficulies, like where is the entrance set - has been the most crucial of all -, hedges and trees. These aspects may be more valuable than the decor and size of some rooms.

Something I forgot: when we had owner occupiers as neighbours we could work things .... but 5 years ago, the owners above let their flat, and things changed drastically as different laws apply for a LL neighbour and different for their tenants' acts. And saves money to consider all situations when buying a house and that is what we try to do now.

  • Morning All, just found this thread...

I can highly recommend the "not buying it" by J Levine; an interesting read but is an american book in case anyone is put off by that.

"In the Red: The Diary of a Recovering Shopaholic" by Alexis Hall is facinating too. Try the library/swapit first though ;)

Then there is "Save Karyn" by Karyn Bosnak (also american)

I have read £1 per day & it just seemed unrealistic for anyone with a family.

Readitswapit is excellent, have used it for years as it cuts down the volume of books - 1 in, 1 out :D . I send all mine 2nd class as this is generally advised AND I get the free proof of posting just in case the book goes astray so that you can claim from the PO for the loss.

Freecycle/freegle is good for decluttering & acquiring things you do need for zilch. I have a fab breadmaker (with instructions) & many other things that amaze people when I said they were free. I constantly give away stuff too so it all balances out. Sometimes people do giveway gifty stuff - I had a bag full of LUSH stuff..oh yes..

Shopping - well - I don't live near any shopping centres so can't be tempted. Bit difficult to get excited over a new wheelbarrow or a pint of milk which is all there is within walking distance.

Am trying the "do I REALLY need it" for days when I visit civilisation. If I can leave it then I can generally do without it...*sniff*

Gifts - can be tricky but for kids then good craft stuff can be acquired online from tickseed or crafty crocodiles without spending a fortune (or £1 shops if you are lucky enough to have one nearby).

Or buy in the sales with a budget. Small children are easy to buy for & I have done most of my birthday/christmas shopping for under £3 per child but looks like I spent £10 :D

Make cakes/bread for new home/baby gifts - far more useful than yet another vase or babygrow that won't fit after a couple of weeks. Promise babysitting etc when they need a break.

I knit badly but keep going....one day the world will be greatful for wonky scarves.

If I buy, then I try Etsy, MiSi or Folksy as they do hand created stuff that's unique, original etc. Much nicer than yet another Boots gift set. (I know Boots can be cheap in the sales but I am blessed with inlaws that are allergic to anything in a gift set) They would love to have them but none of the girlies of any age can tolerate fancy pongs *sigh* hence the need for non-pong gifts :rotfl:

Alternatively have a look at vistaprint (I don't work for them) but do rate them highly as you can tiddle with all the items to make them what you need rather than business stuff. Magnets - calendars with kids pix on - nice for far fung relatives/friends; calendars ditto/ cotton bags with "I love my auntie/dog/dr who collection" etc/ T shirts (upload pix as needed) there's a lot there & I have managed to to acquire every item for the postage alone - usually just £2-£4 for 4 items (4 is the max you can order for "free" i.e. just postage). Do a calendar or photobook & all the photo uploads are free & there for ever after for use on other items...yes your granny does want a keyring of her new budgie....etc

Use money back sites like Topcashback. They currently have an offer with vivastreet where you are PAID £2 for each ad you list online (max 2 per week) so get paid to list your unwanted stuff & possibly flog it too.

Or use free ad papers in your local area - cheaper than ebay & most can be done online..

It can be hard to deny yourself everything so go through all your books/dvds/cds & have a good read/watch/listen - do you really need more at the moment?

Our treat is Lovefilm, we have the basic package £4 per month for 2 dvds (probably more than £4 now) & that gives us access to all the films we need without subscribing to Sky or littering our room with dvds...

Right - need a nice cuppa after all that :)
Lurking in a galaxy far far away...
  • dark star thanks for the tips. i been trying to get the book on readitswapit but no luck. They are on there but no one wants to swap lol but i can get them on ebay cheap. but im not ment to buy. :( gonna wait for a swap.
