that's what I thought :D, the HFW soup sounds interesting then (soup I can eat, in fact I used to eat a heck of a lot of veggie soup and Dr Dragon gradually added more calories to it at the beginning)

1 lb loss for me this week, and another belt hole smaller on my work trousers.

The Dagon, sorry I'm quite new to the forum and not sure I can offer any helpful advice. Is there anyone ie. a dietician at your GP surgery that maybe able to offer some help? One of our family friends (an elderly lady with little appetite) uses those ensure supplement drinks to up her calorie total. Would that be a possibility or a high calorie smoothie type drink to sip on betwen meals??

Feeling tired today after a hectic week, so not a great day foodwise, but have a whole week to make up for it.
B: 2 x toast with lf spread and jam
L: jacket potato, tuna & sweetcorn
D: lf sausage, egg, hm potato bake, mushrooms, beans
S: choc cake bar ( but it was so yummy and reduced in price so very mse), must eat some fruit later.
E: 45 min dog walk this am, will do 30 min later, longer if it stops raining.

Has anyone heard or signed up for this? www.5x50.co.uk
It runs from Sept 9 - Oct 28, and the aim is to walk, jog, run or cycle 5km daily for 50 consecutive days with a collective 5k run to celebrate on the last day at various locations. You can join individually or as a team. I need a goal to keep me motivated exercise wise on my tired and work days, what do people think??

Welcome DaisyDayDream, I have been to a dietician through the Doctors and the Docs actually refused to send any one else to them after me! They insisted I ate nuts even though the Docs, my husband and myself had let them know I am fatally allergic, oh and they told my husband he was an ignorant !!!!!! who knows nothing about chemical interactions (er right this will be Dr Dragon his PhD being in Chemical Engineering, oh and he studied under one of the best food researchers of the day!) - oh and I saw another one and they said the same firkin thing :mad::mad::mad:

Congrats to all the losers and sts's, well done for trying to everyone else :T

Just back from the gym, I can report that so far I've walked a half marathon plus a bit, via treadmill. Mind you this is over the 2 1/2 month period since I joined, on 25th May :rotfl:. Also burning an average 190 cals per session which is up from the 75 when I started. Might not sound like much to the fit and active who swim, run etc daily but I'm really pleased as I have copd, and my breathing is really benefitting from the effort - even if some days it feels like one helluv an effort!
Not much change in body shape but a lot more toned with a little less flab - measurements taken at Easter and today

    Upper arm 11.5 - 11 inches
    Bust 37 - 38
    Chest 34.5 - 34
    Waist 29.5 - 31
    Hips 39.5 - 38
    Thigh 19 - 18.5
    Calf 13 - 13.5

too much muscle in some places, not enough in others! It's a lovely afternoon so going to do a bit of weeding, need get that waist down again. Hope it's sunny where you are :)

    Evening All

We had a busy day at work today so I was pleased to come home to a meal I'd got ready yesterday and only had to put in the oven. DH is away and I hate coming home to an empty house.

B: 2 hardboiled eggs chopped up with salt, pepper and butter.
L: (Pack up at work) Prawn mayonnaise salad. HM chocolate mousse.
D: HM pancake stuffed with mushrooms, spinach and garlic and topped with creme fraiche and cheese. Raspberries with Greek yoghurt.
Snack: Maybe half a bar of dark chocolate (20g) later with a coffee.

Exercise: Just a walk to work and back so only about 1.5 miles.

  • The Dragon, what a carp situation with the dietician etc., their expertise is clearly lacking.
I havn't got any experience or knowledge regarding your situation, the only thing I can compare it to is me calorie cutting as opposed to you calorie gaining.
If it was me then the theoretical option would be to up your fat and sugar intake, those items being the things I cut out, due to their high calorific values. (but low nuitritional value)

I've been thinking of your diet today when walking shammie dog, its my thinking time.
Looking at your daily diet, could you add cream to your porridge or drink milk, milkshake or a smoothie instead of water during the day. Are you happy having a small pudding/dessert after your main meal or snacking on small items. (full fat yoghurt, half a scone, creamed rice pudding, treat size chocolate bar)

That way you are adding little bits of calories without eating a great deal more than you currently do.

Keeping my fingers crossed that you find a solution soon.

Fat is VERY nutritious. Sugar has NO nutritional value. By all means eat as much fat as you like (it doesn't make you fat) but I would never suggest anyone ups their sugar intake.

A diet lower in carbs is meant to be good for those (like The Dragon and I) with underactive thyroids. Also a bonus of upping the fat and dropping the bulky carbs is that you get more energy and nutrition while needing to eat less (4cal in 1g of carbs, 9cal in 1g of fat) so for those with a smaller appetite it's a good way to get more fuel in.

I think I would drop the frequent servings of potatoes/pasta/rice and replace with more protein for muscle building etc and fat for energy, meaning you need smaller portions so may find it easier to eat. I would certainly recommend trying it for a few weeks and seeing how you feel, it won't do any harm (apart from make you need a wee a lot!) and may be enough to get the ball rolling so to speak.

I know I have a lot more energy when I am not up and down with sugar (ie carbs) and I am sure it helps my thyroid problems, certainly helps my mood swings (as long as I can stay away from the sugar, had some chocolate crispy cakes this afternoon and felt so tired a few hours later and really really ratty when I got home!).

Low carb is not for everyone (sorry I go on about it a lot at the moment) but it is certainly worth a try and is most likely more effective and less harmful than a low fat diet. It's not always easy, or neccesarily cheap, but it's certainly healthy.

Oh and Rosewood (and anyone else of course) - I am currently reading Trick and Treat - why 'healthy eating' is making us ill, by Barry Groves, thought you might like it. It's an ok read, take some of it with a pinch of salt as he seems to have a bee in his bonnet about some stuff without a lot of proof but other things are eye opening and supported well by studies so it is worth reading.
