I have two stones to lose as well, 13lbs already lost, I have swopped my butter for light Philly type cheese as find this works with quite a few things. It has seven times less calories than butter.

thanks, going shopping this afternoon, so will get some, I love philly, but i normally buy the supermarket's own brand.

I have tried eating 'healthily' loads of times, but having 2 teenage boys in the house, who moan and groan if there are no 'nice' things in the house , just throws me off track then..

Hi all, I'm a newbie to this thread and have contemplated joining (if I may) a few times.

I used to be a hardcore dieter with an eating disorder (of 20yrs), after finishing my counselling last year, having a baby, I finally feel that I am free of it and appreciate what I have.

So now that my head is screwed on right I feel ready to tackle the weight. After having baby and dealing with my demons I have aprox 60lbs or around 5 stone to lose. I know that for me, I need to break it down into 7lb mini goals, so as not to put too much pressure on myself. I feel all set and ready to.

The problem that is holding me back tho is meals. Our shopping budget has drastically had to be reduced. I cook everything from scratch and have a few old calorie counted meals that I can cook and eat with the family. The problem is, is that there are some meals that I just dont know how to calorie count such as when I do lasagne, cottage pie, toad in the hole etc. I dont want to eat seperate from the family or have to cook a seperate meal. I have access to a site where you type your recipe in and it works out the calories but dosent work with all. for example a stew, easy to enter ing and just do the same serving spoons for each plate, but a cottage pie with hm mash, bulked out with lentils, then the mince and getting the portion right just dosent work. I make my own bread - how on earth do I work that out :( so confused on how to do this and keep my g budget

Is it possible to calorie count os cooking from scratch whilst eating the meals the rest of the family have?

    Any help would be appreciated.

something like www.caloriecount.about.com (a US site but free!) allows you to type in your own recipes, so if you are doing a cottage pie for 4 people you say it serves 4 and you put everything you use into it and save it as a recipe, if you change it next time (more lentils, less potato for example) then just edit the recipe and go on from there.

thanks for replying, how would you do lasagne tho with using lasgane sheets as when you portion it, it would be cut as a whole sheet.

Just googling the bread question now too.

the whole point is that if you have put 100g of pasta in to serve 4 (for example) then the recipe will divide that - so you don't have to! all you do is dish up 4 servings :p

    I am confused....

I need to lose weight, plus i have high blood pressure, that the docs are keeping an eye, and they want me to lose weight, they have suggested a low fat diet ( anything less than 3% fat per 100gms)

I need to lose about 2 stone ( this is my personal goal)

When you talk to people who have lost weight they all tell me diff things.. calorie count, no fat/sugar, no bread, just loads of salads, fruit and veg low carbs,

but i want to eat food for ever not just to lose weight and then put it all back on..

so i was thinking.... just trying to eat more fruit/veg salads etc.. and smaller portions of the main meat etc...

I love mashed 'potch' basically boiled potatoes, carrots, suede and onion just all mashed up together and i normally put a large dollup of butter in:cool: so what do you suggest i can use instead of the butter, that will still give that 'full creamy' flavour?

    Hi and welcome :D

We all do different things to suit our tastes/life styles but it is crazy how much different information there is out there- you could drive yourself crazy. On the whole I try and cut out as much processed rubbish as possible and try to limit my carbs
I alway have proper butter though- i love it :rotfl:

    Hi and welcome
Think your question has been answered but myfitnesspal is also a good site and other people have entered their meals with calories fat etc- sometimes I just take my best guess at calories :rotfl:. I think overall if you counting calories a slight under/over estimated wont harm in the long run :)

    Evening All

When I was calorie counting I used to weigh everything and look up the calorie count either on the back of the packet or by using Google. I would add up all the ingredients in a homemade dish and then divide it by the number of servings it made. Don't forget to keep a record of things you make a lot then you only need to calculate once.

    B: Poached egg on toast
L: (Pack up for work) Chicken salad - with HG leaves, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, beetroot, mushroom and assorted seeds.
D: Sole with a lemon and pepper dusting, grated courgette, mashed swede and HG green beans. Raspberries with Greek yoghurt.

Exercise: 4 mile run. 3.5 miles of walking.

Well, I've finally booked my hypnotherapy sessions - end of the month. I MUST NOT let myself get into the frame of mind of thinking I can eat like a little piggy until then. Also tricky as between my first and second session, I'm off on holiday, and it's also my birthday (which means I have to bake cakes to take to work). This will be a real test of how well it works!

B: Toast and reduced sugar jam
L: Salami salad sandwich, banana, nectarine
D: chicken tikka slice (the fact it was reduced outweighed how unhealthy it was in my mind), broccoli, sweetcorn (served with lemon zest, what a yummy idea that was!)

Followed dinner with an apple and pear crumble, but it was made with oats, no butter, and only about 2 tbsp of sugar, so not as unhealthy as it could have been. I am getting sick and tired of throwing out over-ripe fruit!

Hello to the newbies. With regards to the healthy eating, I cook the same meals for all at home. I reduce the fat content by cutting off the fat etc. and use low calories spray instead of oil. Then when I dish out the meal I serve myself more veg and less carbs than everyone else. I try to only eat until I'm full instead of everything on my plate and put the leftovers in a dish and reheat for lunch the next day. I've also started using myfitnesspal as a rough calorie count, but it also tells you how much carb, protein, fat you are supposed to have each day which is a useful guide.

    WW, have a fab holiday.

    Today:
    B: all bran, fruit
L: baked potato with l/o chicken & lf coleslaw, apple
D: hm chicken curry & rice, small portion of rice pudding
S: one twinks hobnob, lf yoghurt
Ex: 4 miles of dog walking

I'm still not managing as much exercise as I'd like :(, must try harder. Start my 3 x 12hr dayshifts tomorrow, then I have a week off before my next set of nightshifts, so will have to devise a plan.

    Tomorrow ( I eat L & D and snacks at work)
    B: all bran and fruit
    L: l/o chicken curry & rice, apple
D:hm cous cous salad with piri piri chicken fillet, lf yoghurt
S: nature valley bar &/or banana
Ex: 30 min dog walk at 5.30am, too tired after work

Will catch up tomorrow night with everyone.
