With regards to weight gain nearing/during that time of the month, my WW leader a few years ago was a really harsh, butch 'lady' and she used to laugh at you when you'd say it was nearing that time so I might of put on weight. She used to say that weight gain is purely because you cant control yourself and you've eaten to much. I did try to tell her that its a pretty well known fact that women bloat a little and retain water. She was having none of it and we all sat there in dismay...until someone piped up 'I always knew she was a man!'

That's ridiculous! It's not just TOM, all sorts of things can make you retain water - eating stuff high in salt and starch things makes me balloon, my rings go really tight and I have to drink loads of fluids the next day to help get rid! Exercise also causes muscles to retain water while they recover. I can't believe a group leader could have that attitude. :(

Have discovered a gorgeous recipe I just had to share for Spicy Lentil Soup. It was a hit with DD who is 5 and just doesn't like soup usually and 1yr old DS wolfed it down even though he's really poorly at the mo. Here we go. HIH.

    Ingredients

    125g/4oz red lentils
    2tbsp vegetable oil
    1 large onion
    2 garlic cloves
    1tsp ground cumin
    1tsp ground coriander
    1tsp garam masala
    2tbsp tomato puree
    1 litre of stock

    Preparation

    1. Rinse lentils in cold water, drain and set aside.

    2. Heat oil in saucepan, fry onions and garlic until softened.

    3. Stir in cumin, coriander, garam masala, tomato puree and 4tbsp of the stock. Mix well and simmer gently for 2 minutes.

    4. Add lentils and remaining stock. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for approximately 1 hour.

Many thanks for posting this, Sharon. I had all the ingredients in (so very frugal), and it's currently simmering on the hob. Smells delish!

I plan to have it for some lunches at work next week.

    Cheers!

Does anyone else find that as they start to lose weight they spend more time on loo visits? Maybe it's just the cold weather!

Me tooooo, dont know if its because I'm drinking more water/juice/etc to fill me up, but had a couple of close calls whilst out and about today.

Anyway just popped in to say I’ve started off in a very positive frame of mind, taking a long walk to the library, at a guestimate probably about 4 miles round trip, then tidied out the dvd cupboard to find all the exercise ones to try out again next week, before going to @ldi to get my fruit and salad supplies.

    Today I've had
B = Hot water with lemon, boiled egg, dry toast, coffee.
L = Fruit Platter (Pear, Banana, Grapes) with HM Yoghurt.
D = HM Stir Fried Rice with loads of veg and prawns.

Snacks – I’m rationing myself to 1 a day of the remaining home bakes that I have stashed away, tonight I am about to have the last slice of Jam Swiss Roll.

    Good luck everyone.

  • Evening all

I ended up having ½ a bottle of red wine last night and a hand full of Pringles. Whoops :o I am a bit more relaxed with my eating on a weekend so I suppose I will have to do Friday/Saturday this weekend instead of Saturday/Sunday.

Ragz – I agree the Activia yogurts are so much nicer than Mullerlights. I only buy them when they are on offer though!

    Today’s food
B: branflakes with banana, sultanas and skimmed milk
L: very thin slices of cheese on wholemeal toast (still using Christmas cheese up!) side salad, pickle onion
D: HM pizza (I made my ½ healthier with less cheese, more veg etc)
Snacks: ½ pint of SS milk for teas, 2 quality street, grapes, snack sushi

I need to start exercising, just for a minimum of 10 minutes everyday and building up from there. I started by talking the dog for a walk after lunch. I have also bought one of those 10 minute solution DVDs (£4 in Morrison’s) I read the reviews on Amazon and they are supposed to be quite good.

Trying to use my slow cooker more this year, do you think this would be on in that for an 8 hour stew? Great recipe thanks

    Hi everyone

So excited to have found this thread. I am currently 9st 9 1/2 lbs, the heaviest I have been for about 4 years. I am at that point where all my clothes are getting a bit snug and I either need to lose weight or go up a dress size which I really dont want to do.

I am a carer for my poorly son and my diet is basically OK but I have developed some really bad habits. The worst is finishing my sons meals! He has a poor appetite so will ask for something to eat then only have a few mouthfuls before giving it to me and saying he cant eat it. He often puts some of his food on my plate because it makes him feel better about not wasting it. This has got to stop.

I also need to get out more and exercise. I feel guilty that I dont get my son out exercising more too. It would benefit both of us physically and mentally but its just easier not to bother when its cold and grey.

So thats two New Year Resolutions to start with. I am going away in February which is roughly half way to Easter so thats a good point to aim for. I want to get back down to 9st but am not in a hurry to do it. 7lbs by Easter would be fantastic.

I'm sure someone who knows more about this will be along shortly to advise you, but personally I wouldn't. I find the SC works well for cheaper cuts of meat that need long slow cooking, and that releases the gorgeous meatiness.

When I did this recipe tonight, it really didn't take long at all for the lentils to soften. l then blitzed it with the hand blender. Tastes delish :)

Not in a very good mood today, I just can't motivate myself. I feel really down and teary. I guess it's a touch of the moany January blues/horrible weather/dark days and darker nights.

    ::hugs::

Think there must be something in the air today, I've been feeling the same :( Feel like I've been in tears on and off most of the day today  silly thing is that it was something really small that set me off this morning (DH walked mud through the house) and I don't seem to have stopped all day :(

Have managed to say away from the comfort food I'd usually reach for so guess not all bad. Had a low cal hot chocolate rather than reaching for the biscuits.

    Hope everyone else is ok

I did post this on another thread but thought it would be better here!, im starting my weightloss tommorow

    Hi all,

Wow thankyou for all your replies! Ive been giving the whole healthy eating lifestyle a lot of thought, we all need to change our attitiude to food (me,oh,dd), and we need to start viewing chocolate etc as a treat and not as part of a normal daily diet.

I want to incorperate a OS angle too, using up leftovers, cutting food waste, i dont buy a lot of junk food anyhows nearly everything we consume is homemade so thats a thumbs up we just eat too much of it.

I was talking to my husband last night about all this and we where thinking back to when we where youg and the familys eating habits then, i remeber we used to have 3 meals a day all homemade and fruit inbetween, maybe a glass of milk for bed, there was never no fizzy pop, biscuits, crisps or chocolates in, we used to get a treat on a saturday night and a video rented ! lol, but even then it wasnt exsesive just a pkt of crisps or a standard size bar of chocolate, and it made it feel all special on sat nights lol

My mum also used to cook hm chips once a week usually friday nights and we where never overweight, my nan has a old tea set, and i compared the size of the dinner plates to mine (ikeas& next) OMG the diff is a good few inches ........... so maybe os eating is the way to go?
