I agree about the learning, my Sundays are generally a caloriefest but I am learning and things are improving.

HOWEVER, today I made a cheesecake to use up a tub of 'light' Philadelphia. OMG I am so glad I ate some before I calculated the calories on MYFitnesPal, or I swear I never would have eaten any. :rotfl: It could have been much worse, at least it wasn't full fat cream cheese.

    B. Scrambled eggs, toast and grilled tomatoes
    D. Roast chicken breast and little bit of stuffing, roast potatoes, carrots and sweetcorn. Apricot cheesecake.
Snack: 3 Danish Butter cookies (Xmas clutter)

I must not eat anything more today!! I banged my foot quite badly yesterday and my toes are purple today, so not sure I am doing much exercise this week either. :(

Ragz, that's a really interesting way of looking at change, it makes a lot of sense.

Kiwisaver, bad news about the cheesecake calories, cheesecakes are yummy though and as you say at least it was low fat. Your poor foot!! I hope it feels better soon.

    Today:
B: porridge made with water and raisins
L: toasted pittas (to use up) and hummus
D: SC chicken, rice and veg, raspberry torte for desert. :o
S: either pecan nuts, or berries with low fat greek yoghurt

Exercise: 30 mins exercise DVD (done) and a 1 hour-ish walk.

Have a good Sunday all. :)

  • Well folks the bar for me has just been raised, after watching an exercise DVD last week I finally got off my lazy backs*de and did some of it yesterday, 30mins aerobic (low impact version) & 10mins tummy & leg work, cause I haven’t done anything like this for ages I didn’t half work up a sweat and ended up with a face like a full moon, but I’m determined to stick with it, red face and all.

I need to use up some banana’s that are getting rather ripe so I’m entering the ‘danger zone’ and going to bake some muffins. I will freeze them (honest) and only take them out one at a time; they will be a nice change to have for breakfast.
    Today’s plan is as follows,
B – Fresh Fruit salad, yoghurt
    L – Tuna & Pasta Salad
D – Patatas Bravas, broccoli & green beans.
For a snack I will no doubt do a taste test on the muffins.
Just had a search on the Forum and found that you can freeze bananas, which is a relief – so that’s 2 for the muffins and 2 frozen for smoothies at a later date.

    Have a good day.

An interesting article by a psychologist about self sabotage really spoke to me. In order give ourselves an excuse for failure we often unconsciously don't try our best, so that we can then say things like "Oh well I would have lost weight this week but I ..." and then don't face failing when we have really tried so we will look bad/feel like a failure (either to others or ourselves). Apparently this goes for job interviews, exams etc, people will stay up late the night before or have a hangover or something and then have a ready made excuse for not doing well rather than failing for no obvious reason and feeling they may be stupid... (it's all about protecting the "self" apparently, psychology wise).
He recommends looking at it as a learning curve rather than a challenge, so when we don't do as well as we like we can see it as still needing to learn more rather than being a failure.

I may well be guilty of these behaviours myself, especially with trying to lose weight so it gave me a lot to think about and I think it could well be true...

    Discuss?

I agree that it is more of a learning curve, but don’t really like the term “self-sabotage” I think losing weight or trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle is about making choices and balancing the types of food that we eat.

I don’t necessarily think any food stuff is bad, but there are some that I will only eat rarely or in moderation. There is lots of information out there about low/high calorie foods and we are regularly told that Indian/Chinese food/takeaways are not the best choice, but I think it’s more about the quantity that we eat rather than the food itself. I can’t say that I know or have seen many Asian people who are overweight and they must be eating the food they prepare.

I also think we develop some unhealthy relationships with food, I regularly hear people saying that they “comfort eat” or “through boredom” then feel guilty about it – I know it may be easy for me to say, but why not try doing something about the cause rather than the consequence – choices again. I have a tendency to reach for a glass of wine, I enjoy it but there is no way I am going to “beat myself up” about it or consider myself a failure. I’m aware of my weakness and am able to do something about it; not buying it is a good start :D.

Apologies for the long post and perhaps my somewhat simplistic view.

  • Evening All,

We had a good time away. We thought it was cold in Amsterdam - canals all frozen and people skating - but got home to find it minus 12!! Anyhow, the snow has started melting today so I am hoping it will all go quickly so I can get back into running as the 10K I have signed up for is only 3 weeks away.

I ate loads both nights on the ship and so now need to concentrate on getting back to normal.

B: Poached egg on dry toast
L: HM celery soup and a slice of HM bread. Few raspberries
D: HM vegetarian lasagne (made with mushrooms and lentils and HG tomato puree) and topped with small amount of creme fraiche and cheese. Small apple pie with custard

    Exercise: None at all
