Decluttering 2012, this year, definitely ...

On a completely different note, as someone mentioned paint offers, in spring last year, my dh and I had a plan to paint the lr. We bought 2x dulux for £20 from the range. We had a feature wall, and bought the "toning" paint suggested in the booklet. But it was awful (we only painted a small patch). I got dh to return it and just pick up a cream one. He returned the two tins (one opened) to b&q and got cream ones, that were on 3 for 2. So he came back with three of them, lol. 3 tins of dulux for £20 bless him.Bossymoo

Hi Sweatpea,
I understand how you are feeling as I am in the middle of decluttering at the moment.....13 bags to a cash for clothes place last week earned me £32 and the hall is lined with books, decent handbags, unworn clothes, shoes and knick nacs etc that may be useful to someone, for the charity shop.
We do have numerous current decluttering threads where you'll get lots of support and advice so I'll add this thread to the most main 2012 thread later:

Good luck with clearing out, you'll feel so much better once it's done!

Its the overwhelming feeling when you see so many things that need doing....I used to set serious high goals for myself and set myself up for failure each time and feel worse about the whole place. I think if we could focus on one space and hit it with all our energy until it is sorted, we can close the door on it and move to the next one. We can pop in now and again when we are overwhelmed with what has to be done and realise we are capable of succeeding. Hope that makes sense.
.
I understand how some tasks can just make you feel overwhelmed. so I have decided to share my favorite saying,
" the only way to eat an elephant, is one bite at a time"
break all the tasks down into 5 minute jobs, set a timer, work for 5 minutes then stop, review your progress, then start again, or choice a single box or drawer to deal with .
I have found that this works for me for all tasks i find daunting, from paperwork to cleaning and sorting,
hope it helps.today's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.
Living on my memories, making new ones.

Shame this thread will be merged, but I am DEFINATELY with you!!! Started yesterday with the utility room in the garage and found a load of school uniform and a duvet in the dryer that I'd been looking for!!!! Been there for a week - eek. Have listed one piece of furniture on eBay this afternoon, and tomorrow will start on the spare room which is where I put all my stuff to be sold! Will make a start whilst my dog watches the Grand Prix (!) on the magazines - those that aren't to be kept will go on the fire, brrrrrrr.Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -
Hi Sweetpea and others
Mr Lema and I have given ourselves from now until christmas to get the house completely decorated, clean, tidy with a place for everything and everything in its place. If it hasn't been used for 12 months or more, its gotta go.Lucylema x :j0 -

Why do you think that it's a 'shame this thread will be merged' with an identical and popular thread that is full of advice and still current on the front page of the Old Style board?
Or would you prefer that every Old Styler has their own personal decluttering diary thread?
If that were the case then other users wouldn't be able to find the moneysaving information that they are looking for. There is good reason behind merging of threads.

Hi Sweetpea and all. I am with you on this, I'm (trying) to follow the Flylady thread to keep up with day to day chores but I always stumble on the decluttering bits. I, like you, have a mountain (or two) of clothes to be sorted, so I will start with that tomorrow too............they are dominating the dining room!!! Tuesday is inset day so I will get DD to help me sort through her wardrobe and drawers..........The way she has grown over the summer, I'm sure half of it won't fit her any more!!!
Good luck all xx0 -

The reason I started a diary was to help me cope with many changes in my life and to focus on something positive. I am sorry that it is similar to other threads. I get so much from MSE and will search the other thread for many tips I am sure.
I will keep an eye on the old styler thread and comment once and a while.

I completely understand that you did not know there was an existing thread. Please do join in with it as you will benefit so much from the support of others trying to clear their houses, as I have done in my recent decluttering.
I just wish there wasn't soooo much more to do.But onwards and upwards...it would be fantastic if my home was to be clutter free by the end of 2012! Hopefully yours will be too.

I know there is another thread, and all the board guides do fantastic jobs, just me being lazy, that's all. 😊Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
