Decluttering 2012, this year, definitely ...

I saw the other thread was closed, so went looking - and here you all are! I'm in major declutter mode at the moment - I have finally had enough of a drastically absentee landlady (Australia no less!) and have decided we will be moving as soon as I can find somewhere with a proper agent to look after things properly. First viewing Tuesday, so fingers crossed!
To start off with, our bins were due to be emptied on Saturday, but they got emptied Friday - so I phoned to check. I was assured they would be done on Saturday as well, Friday was a bonus, so Friday afternoon was spent decluttering the kids bedrooms - and I filled the bin just from those 2 rooms! Shame I can't do the same with the other rooms really :rotfl: but I suppose that's why I have a car!
I'm following the original Flylady principles of "don't move anything you don't love" and "you can do anything for 15 minutes" - so far it seems to be working, but I've still got a lot of house to get through. On the plus side, the time I'm decluttering the house is time I'm not stuffing my face, so the excess weight will also go :j
Good luck to the rest of you with your plans for this year.0 -
I would like to join if you don't mind. There is only me and OH(and 4 cats!) in a 3 bedroom 2 reception room house with garage, shed, greenhouse, two small outbuildings... and we still have so much stuff nothing has a home!
Going to make a start in the spare room where there is a wall cupboard which was full of rubbish (including a box of computer bits which hasn't been opened since we moved in nearly 4 years ago so it's all obsolete!).
The plan is to empty the old manky canvas wardrobe, turn the wall cupboard into hanging space, clear out any unwanted clothes (mum has said she will do a car boot with me - yay!) and box up any summer clothes under the bed. We can then move at least one of the units from our bedroom into the spare room and hopefully our room will look a little less cramped.
That's the plan anyway :rotfl:0 -
Added 2 books and 7 pairs of socks to the CS bag last night.
Now for the Xmas decorations - ours always come down on 1st January so I'm going to cull them today as there's more still in the box than we've used in the last couple of years. Wish me luck!I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
Made a start on the study yesterday. OH started with his CD's, of which he has hundreds. ANyways he has trimmed around 20 and we will get about £25 for them from Music Magpie, which will take the holiday fund to over £300. There are many more he could have got rid of but still won't.
He has been gathering paperwork - but i think the study needs more radical organisation than that. My task today is to sort through the old college notes from my MSc - I havent' looked at them for 5 years so they aren't going to be a lot of use now. Any that might still be useful i will keep, but most is out of date.
The tree will come down tomorrow or, more likely, Tuesday.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Count me in too!
There's myself and partner with 2 children in a 2 up 2 down terrace. The amount of stuff we have cluttered is unreal. I went through my bookcase, I had a 6ft 4 shelf bookcase, triple stacked with books on each shelf! Eek. I kept the books I couldn't bear to part with and have given the rest away to family/friends/charity shop. I sold the bookcase too because the temptation to fill it would still be there.
Hopefully at some point in the new year, we might be moving to a bigger house. I can't imagine having to move all of this stuff!
I have gained a lot of weight over the past few years and for some reason I am loath to get rid of my smaller clothes. I'm going to keep one piece for inspiration and get rid of the rest. Similarly, as I lose weight I will be getting rid of the bigger clothes asap.
I think the decluttering of the house will help me declutter everything else in my life that I am hanging onto but don't need.0 -
I know it's not a lot but got rid of a carrier bag full of bits and bobs from our room. Looking better in there now; might even have to vacuum as I can see the floor againFlymarkeeteer: £168 and counting0

Oooh mumof2, don't go too far, enjoy seeing the floor before *shudder* getting the hoover out! I'm dreading moving house as I'll finally have to go under my bed and hoover!
I need to stop procrastinating and get back into the loft0 -
Well wish me luck. I'm hitting the loft today to put the tree up (or rather he is cause i dont really like heights and if i fall not only will i fall down the ladder, i'll be falling down the stairs too.
I'm going to need your luck to persuade the other half to let go of the camping toilet. Considering we havent used it for 25 years and we wont be using it in my lifetime ever i cant see why he is still keeping it. Every time i tackle him about it he says 'it might come in useful one day'.... I'm sorry but i'd rather piddle in a bucket and starve for a week than use that thing. I am hoping to liberate some other [STRIKE]junk[/STRIKE] treasures too. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. i have the same conversation with my other half to let go of a rusted bbq. There's no way we could ever use it again but he's not letting it go, might just wheel it out for the scrapmen while he's out and see if he notices :rotfl:0
