I have recently taken out a new buildings only policy on a bungalow in rurual Leicestershire. I was surprised to find an exclusion of damge caused by riots etc and queried this. I was infromed that this was now standard industry practice - presumably a reaction to last summers riots. Is this true.
The insurers are AXA - one of the main players, not a 'cheap' option.0 -
For all the insurance companies I have ever worked for riot is covered as standard so if you want that cover you should shop around.
What normally is excluded is losses due to war, NBC contamination and terrorism etc.
If you ever did have a riot in Leicestershire (an unruly gang of cow-tippers perhaps?) and your property was damaged them you could claim back from the police through the Riot (Damages) Act of 1886 which you can read here:
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Vict/49-50/38/enacted
Bear in mind the definition of riot has to be met before they will pay out on this which is why police normally state there has been a "civil commotion" rather than a riot, if you make a claim through your insurer for a riot they will undoubtedly try to recover from the police using this piece of legislation.0 -

So I tried getting an online quote from Saga Online, and first it wouldn't let me put her address in, it said 'You already have a policy'. So I put in her next-door neighbour's address (same kind of property) and got a quote for £239, just half of the asked renewal. So I phoned Saga and asked to renew at £239, was told that that price is for NEW customers ONLY - and I think it's disgraceful that Saga are looking to discount to new customers and not prepared to reward loyal customers who stay with them...
He's 76 and banked with TSB since 1955 (yes, 57 years!). Took out home insurance in 2000 on a 4-bed detached house. Had 3 small claims in the first 4 years as it was a new build, after which they promptly added a 25% premium loading to the buildings insurance. No claims now for almost 8 years, but premium loading still seems to apply because they haven't told him otherwise. His renewal prem is £697 and that's supposedly with a 35% no claims discount. I'm currently shopping around for him and getting quotes from £203. Lloyds TSB are quoting £225 for a new customer.
Funnily enough, I read an article online talking about the difference in costs of home insurance quotes for new and existing customers, and there were only two insurance companies who wouldn't comment for the article - Lloyds TSB being one of them. Guilty much?0 -
apologies in advance as new to this. I contacted my insurerOct 2011 re an awful smell in one of downstair bedrooms. Insurer advised that I would need to find source of smell. The master bedroom ensuite backs onto this room so we thought there may be a leak so got a joiner to lift flooboards and also cut into gyproc wall to check for leaks , this was clear. So arranged for drains to be jet blasted for any blockages but problem still not resolved. Arranged for Dynarod to carry out a CCTV scan which showed that the pipework coming from shower (installed over 22 yrs ago prior to us purchasing house) and macerator toilet (macerator installed 8yrs ago) was narrower that main sewage pipe and therefore creating a flow back of sewage liquid into soil creating smell and subsidance therfore creating additional opportunity for pipework movement.
Dynarod quoted £2500 + vat to replace drains, I then sourced another company who quoted £2100 inc vat. Insurer agreed I could go ahead with repair whilst they were considering if claim was covered under policy. The total cost of repair came to £1680 inc vat. Insurer passed all details to a drainage assessor who advised the insurer that the claim was non conlusive for full insurance cover and to offer us £830 less our excess payment of £450 therefore settlement would be £380. All in all taking into account investigations and repairs we are out of pocket just over £2000, I would have cut my losses at £1230 to cover repair costs. I have currently declined over of £380.
Would greatly appreciate assistance on how I fight this claim0 -
how I building insurance with another party ? thanks.0

I am guilty of having a policy for 10 years and although I do all the rest of the finances I have not been paying attention to what we pay and whether it is too much.
I am with direct line and we pay a monthly premium of £48.59 which seems really steep.
Out policy says other interests says Direct Line FInancial Services as Mortgagee they haven't been we sapped to HSBC over 5 years.
Our current Building cover is £250,000 although house prices in this area are £120,000 so am I being naieve in thinking this is way too high and I only need to cover price of house plus an extra 10 or 20 K.
Our contents cover is £35,000 and this seems high .
We have never made a claim in 10years.
My husband is reluctant for me to swap as my dad says the one insurance you should not interfere with is the house insurance and whilst I am unlikely to go with a company I have never heard of I do feel we are paying way above the average .
I should point out we have a 3 ned semi- detached house in a rougher part of Bristol.
So where do I start ....with comparison sites and does anyone have any companies they can recommend or steer clear of.Extra Payment a Week Challenge: (joined 15.01.12) This week £27.34 /Total so far £42.34
Pay off as much as i can in 2012: £222.34 / 5000
