  • I have just realised I missed my renewal date in January and am paying at least £100 more than I should be. Is there anyway I can change my house insurance now or do I have to wait until next January?

You can cancel a policy at any time.

Check the total cost of cancelling to make sure it will be cost effective to cancel and go elsewhere before you do anything! (There may be cancellation fees to pay on top of any other charges)

i have been a victim of burglary and my insurers axa heve said they may not pay out as i am underinsured..... my jewellery was stolen in the burglary and i have 60000 contents cover which of 19800 is valuables cover as i believe that amount is enough to cover my valuables when i took my insurance out in sept 2011. after axa forwarded all photo and details of jewellery stolen to lmg to value, they have said that the value of my jewellery is 40000 plus, that is over valued.... help..... i have only had my insurance 3 months before i got burgled.... i have been so truthful ans honest and they are treating me like a criminal.... ?????????/

Hi I,m new to this so please forgive me if this information in the wrong place.
I have just received my renewal quote from Northern rock for £416.52 for building and content. I,ve had my morgage with them so I,ve just kept renewing each year. I called to cancel the policy and they have told me I have to sign a declartion to cancel and pay £25.00 for administration. Can they do that? Has this happened to anyone else?

No, just do not renew your cover. Phone them and tell them that they are too expensive and that you will not be renewing the home insurance with them.

They will respond by saying that as you have a mortgage, they (the lender) have a financial interest. This is not a problem.
You just tell your new insurer that the building society you have the mortgage with has a financial interest, then send the building society a copy of the insurance certificate.

I have just renewed mine, and several years fell into the same trap as you but with Prudential. Renewed every year and never queried cost. When I did use the comparison sites, very interesting cost savings of over £250 pound.

This years renewal came in at £326, cost comparison "Like for like" got it down to £170. So it is worth every year even with the hassle of using comparison sites, just make sure you have cover that is the same as you already have to get a true reflection of the premium. Don't forget as well that the more Excess you can afford e.g £300 instead of £50 the premiums are reduced quite considerably.

If in doubt phone the insurer and discuss your needs before applying online. It is worth the time and effort

  • I know that insurance of any kind is usually taken out for a period of one year but is there such a thing as short term home insurance. Reason being my buildings and contents insurance is about to expire but my house is up for sale and hopeful of a sale within a few months. Therefore it would be a waste to pay hundreds of pounds for full yearly cover.

Could anyone advise me if it's possible to take out cover for six months or less as aware buildings insurance is a requirement until new owners take possession.

  • Hello, I hope someone can help me with this to ease the worry. My partner has held insurance for our home for just under 2 years, through a broker, underwritten by Lloyds. Six months ago we hada substantial fire at our property and in December 2011, we were granted indemnity (insurer confirmed we were covered). The insurance hadn't been in touch since January 2012 and we were getting very worried at the lack of info, especially since they had stopped paying us interim payments for alternative accomodation rent. At the weekend we received a letter from their solicitors stating my partner had relevant convictions and our insurance was being avoided. They found this out in January and left us with no info until now.
His conviction was for criminal damage when he was 17. He was convicted when he was 18 and received 3 months Young Offenders suspended for 12 months. We assumed this conviction was spent after 3 years according to yourrights.org. This was 7 years ago, he is now 25.

What are our rights? Should the insurance companies solicitors not have recognised these as spent?

    I'd appreciate any help!

Thats sounds incredibly harsh. I would definitely be seeking legal advice.

I would check what question the insurer asks regarding convictions. The reason being, because alot ask for ay convictions in the last 5yrs
