  • We have large through lounge and there is a TV at both ends. Really only so kids can watch their channels etc and when they're playing on the Wii, we can still watch something else (this doesn't happen often though).

But having both TV's on drives me insane! Hubby will often have both TV's on, so he can have the football on and something else at the same time. Quite often he's done this and had the radio on as well!

When I'm home on my own, I don't very often have the TV on, unless there's something specific I want to watch. Sometimes I have the radio on in the background if I fancy some music.

I live on my own and I like it on loud; it's so we can hear everything that's going on. We turn it up louder when there's a woman in the room for a couple of reasons:
1 - hopefully you'll realise the TV is on loud so we can watch it, and you don't try talking to us
2 - if it's on loud you might actually listen, realise what's going on and not ask us to explain it every 6 minutes.

No meritaten you are not alone! How can "I live on my own" turn into " we can hear everything?" "We turn it up?" and "we can watch it?"

my mum had hearing problems when I was growing up and had the tv on so loud I could hear every word from my bedroom! I used to beg her to turn it down so I could go to sleep! but she refused to saying that it 'wasnt loud'! nowadays you can hear her tv outside the house with all the doors and windows shut! and her neighbour is worse! Luckily they cant hear each other!

My OH must have ears like a bat! he has everything so quiet so I cannot even catch what they are saying on the tv or the radio in the car! and refuses to turn it up saying that I must be deaf! my hearing is actually pretty good! cos I got it checked last year as I was convinced he must be right!

Either that or you are turning into your mother :rotfl:

I could explain it but you're clearly too thick to understand.

If the TV is too loud for anyone in our house, we just turn it down. Problem solved.

One of my (many) pre-menstrual symptoms is sensitivity to noise. TV is on much quieter then ;-) I can't even stand the radio on in the car when I'm pre-menstrual, and more than one noise in a room (e.g. radio, washer, cooker hood, someone talking) sends me over the edge.

My now ex-housemate worked like this - the more interesting your film/programme, the more inane a subject she would choose to witter on about. Favourite topic was listing all the men she knows who fancy her. I'd try to be polite and listen but I'm no saint and could only take so much.
We tried a few things to shut her up - turning up the volume, ignoring her, pausing the DVD (often it was paused so long that the DVD player would turn itself off - this did not stop her either).
Eventually we worked out that she is a bit like a parrot or a budgie - if there are no lights on in the room then she doesn't talk!! Putting a blanket over her was tempting but probably unwise.

I'm so glad I'm not the only to notice this. It drives me insane!

I'm pretty sure that my OH only turns the telly up loud for either one of the options presented by scheming gypsy! lol :rotfl:The rest of the time he complains that I have it too loud!

I do seem to need it louder. I have trouble ignoring any other background noise, like the hum of the computer or the washing machine, so I have to turn it up to compensate, whereas OH doesn't seem to have that problem! Go figure!

Great thread OP men do seem to have the telly up much louder.

Take my dad yesterday, there were 12 of us here enjoying New Years Day whilst he monopolised our telly watching Discovery Channel as he does everyday - despite seeing the programmes a dozen times before. He is deaf in one ear but had the nerve to have the telly up so loud in our house then complain about our 5 year old and his 4 year old cousin playing too loudly in the room next door!!

    Happy moneysaving all.
