Hmm what about out of date flour? I have aug 2011 wholemeal bread flour, and rather older plain flour -no weevils present unless they so small they not visible to human eye :rotfl:MrsSD declutter medals 2023 🏅🏅🏅⭐⭐ 2025

My house smells lovely!
Got 4 massive banana bread loaves as recommended by Jarus in the oven to use up a whole load of bananas that were looking past their best.
Only problem is I don't have much room in the freezer! Looks like people will be getting unexpected banana bread presents tomorrow
Thanks Katy - I need to get making Banana Bread this weekend as the bananas are turning and I have absolutely no room on the freezer.
Have you tried the Delicious Weetabix Cake that was a real hit in this house.
Glad you're enjoying.
Will pop in over next few days to declare my february total

Playing freezer tetris this morning, took out some of frozen rather than thrown away food. 5 ice cubes of pasta sauce, left over grated mozzarella from fakeaway pizza, 1 chopped up frankfurter, handful frozen peas and portion of pasta. ScrummyMrsSD declutter medals 2023 🏅🏅🏅⭐⭐ 2025

 beef bones that cost me 58p and were going to be made into a stock - soup were off when i opened them up this morning. In fact they smelled so bad they made BiL sick:p
I checked the use by date - it was only 1st March so I suspect they were probably off when I bought them  - they couldnt have gone so bad in 3 days.....thanks Mr A!

I have started sorting through my store cupboard every 6 months in order to avoid tins packets etc passing their use by dates. Prior to this I would sometimes find things in the back of the cupboards 2 or 3 years out of date. Although I would still always give them a try, I am trying to use everything in it's 'use by' order. It is so easy to add new 'bargain' purchases to the front of the cupboard whilst earlier bought things get pushed to the back.
I now have a system wherby anything past it's use by date sits on the worktop, in full view, to be used asap. I then have a cupboard for anything approaching or on it's use by date to be used next. This system improves the chances of eliminating waste.0 -

What a great idea ! Guess what i'm going to be doing later now ? :T0 -
OH said how pleased he was that we're doing this 'no wasting food' challenge - he likes how we're being more inventive with our food and that we're saving money too. SUCCESS!
We had the potato & leek, and butternut squash soups for lunch yesterday. Both soups used up 'on the turn' veg, frozen veg and stock, and it was a much healthier Saturday lunch than normal. I chucked a few bits of week old gammon into each too, yummy.
Our wastage has still been only the odd spoonful off of a plate, but even OH is getting better at finishing his food now so I actually met the Feb challenge at a final figure of only £3.50!! I think I'll leave my March challenge total at £5 though as we are moving house and we may not have the time to be so inventive, and we won't be able to freeze much.
So far this month, I had to throw away 2 mini HM plum crumbles, I am finding that my crumbles just don't freeze that well. I make the crumble as normal and cook it, allow it to cool then freeze. When I reheat it the topping shrinks and caramelises, and there's a slight burn taste although no blackness. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I am saving good veg peelings for a stock so even less wastage there.
I have found 4 slightly soft potatoes in a brown paper bag this PM, they've sprouted a bit, are soft and a bit wrinkly. I think they're ok to do something with, probably soups or chips, but I just want to check with the forum?0 -
Hi everyone,
I keep my potatoes out of polythene in the dark in a cupboard. Went to get some today, about a week and a half old, and they're sprouting majorly, and have gone a bit soft. Are they usable?
