Don't Throw Food Away Challenge 2012

  • Nearly there (end of month, I mean) can't believe how frugal we have been.

Great ideas picked up from everyone, have helped me to avoid wasting silly things.

However, have to declare 1/4 pot of natural yoghurt, the cheap 79p one, so that is another 20p. Also about 1/8 pot of double cream, was on a whoops, so I estimate 12p.

OH away now for just over 2 weeks, so will 'make do and mend', so should escape without anymore throw aways.

Pleased to see that everyone is doing so well and enjoying the challenge, as I am. Good luck for the last couple of days of this month.

    Off to update my sig.
MSE Addiction, should come with a health warning:money:
  • Well I have another thing to declare - half an avocado that wasn't really ripe (we ate the first half, but couldn't force down the 2nd half). Annoying, but I suppose I should be glad that it wasn't chucked because of wastefulness.

That brings my total to either 86p for the month (if I don't cost the 45p cottage cheese that someone nicked from the office fridge) or 1.31 if I do. Of course, I assume that I won't throw anything away tomorrow...
  • Right big confession - not going to list what I had to throw but it must have been at least £4 of food from fridge and fruit bowl - but in my defence I have had this norovirus and interest in food has been zero until today, when I realised DD's have just left stuff to go off instead of using it - oh well ,hopefully next week will better.

    Yes! Soup!

Sorry about the exclamation marks but gammon stock is my all time favourite for making soup with - even veggie soup (although don't offer it to any veggie people, obviously :D).

I had to chuck it as I didn't have space to put it anywhere, and certainly not in the fridge after I made all that soup!!

But it's good to know someone else uses that water for soup. Can I just make sure I know what to do for next time? I filter the bits out of the water, and then I could refridgerate it or freeze it and then use it when next making a soup. I get the feeling that I would not need to add salt if I'm using this water.
  • A dried out chipatti (9p) and a quarter pot of home made raita (12p) that separated after our home made curry night to add to the total.:o

I also found a catering tub of vegetable bouillon powder that was in the cellar from a catering event I did a few years ago..... but I'm refusing to add it to my total because its from before I started shopping more carefully:D.... and theoretically I got it for free as it was left over from the event. :A

My freezer is creaking its so full! I must have a use up week......or 6!

    I'd be betting on six.

Got most of a 1kg bag of carrots left in the fridge from the 30p Morrisons special offer (amazing!) so going to chop them tomorrow and freeze them in portions for later use :) Do I need to blanche them or prepare them in any way first? I've never frozen raw veggies before so not 100% sure on how to go about it, but I don't want to fully cook them first as I'd like them to keep their crunch :)

My freezer book says yes quick blanche to destroy enzymes and bacteria. 2 mins for slices or juliennes, 5 mins for small whole. If you want to use them loose freeze them on trays then transfer to bag. I read somewhere they make very good and cheap alternative to slices of mushroom.

    My house smells lovely!

Got 4 massive banana bread loaves as recommended by Jarus in the oven to use up a whole load of bananas that were looking past their best.

Only problem is I don't have much room in the freezer! Looks like people will be getting unexpected banana bread presents tomorrow :)

Yes, refrigerate or freeze and just use when making soup - if you keep in the fridge rather than the freezer, you will need to boil it up after a few days. You won't need salt - it makes a good minestrone type soup with lots of veg and beans. I have some in the fridge for my work lunches this week!

    Wow... March already!

OK... I'm going to add 20p for those tiny bits and bobs that I can't be [STRIKE]ar[/STRIKE] bothered to calculate exactly. You know, stuff like the rind on brie which, for me, spoils the taste - though I know some people like it.

That makes my total for Feb: £1.25

So that's an improvement on last month :)

And my total for the year to date (YTD): £2.85
