    Hi

    Now to my food wastage
    On the minus side
    Yesterday
    3 pears
    1 satsuma
    1 apple

    Not sure how much 80p?

On the plus side I made Microwave Banana Pudding which used up 2/3 black bananas and a Banana Tea bread which used up the rest of the black bananas in the fruit bowl plus some of my stock in the freezer. Down side nearly half gone already!!!

    Today

No waste so far - yippee

Nearly threw out some bread - but made into breadcrumbs instead thanks to this thread. All gone in the freezer some to use for making fishcakes and the rest to make a Herb Crumb Pasta that I want to try.

18 months ago I bought loads of preserving sugar to make jam but didn't end up making it. The sugar has been sitting there ever since. Just before Christmas I decided that I needed to use it up, so we have been using it in drinks instead of normal sugar - works fine. Also we have been using it in baking. I think it is taster than normal sugar. DS made millionaires shortbread with it and the base had this lovely crunchy texture. Also use it to make the Banana Pudding and Banana Teabread yesterday - delicious. Good job it's working only 10 bags to use up!!

Also made a really nice "Monday Night Rice" if anyone interested in recipe.

Have just found some filo pastry on the fridge from Christmas that needs using, so googled for recipes. Up popped "Goats cheese and filo parcels with Red onion marmalade" Tomorrow's nights tea sorted. We have red onions and goat's cheese in the fridge as well.

Sorry I am a bit of a recipe bore!!! I love trying new recipes. You'll just have to tell me to be quiet if I am boring you.

    Hey All,

have had a quick read through and am really interested in this. I've just joined the reduce grocery spend challenge thread as I'm spending way too much on food at the mo. I also know tho that I'm throwing loads away.

I just wondered tho if anyone else has small children on here? A lot of what I throw tends to be dinners and bits that the kids don't eat. It's often been 'played with' so not something I'd want to use up as leftovers!! My DS1 (age 4) is particularly bad for this, last night he didn't eat any of his dinner and tonight he had 2 bites!! I try to give him a very small portion to cut down the waste, but I can never predict if he's going to have a day when he will eat or one where he won't!!! Kids huh!!

Could you make the tea as usual and only give him a small portion of it. If he eats it then give him seconds, if he doesnt then put the rest in the freezer to defrost for another meal? That way it hasnt been on his plate to be played with, but the offer is there if he wants more?

I have to do this with my own meals because I did start a habit of always having to leave something on my plate for some reason. I started only giving myself tiny portions on my plate and leaving the rest of the food in the pan. If I wanted more then I could have seconds and if I didnt then I could freeze or fridge it for next time, and it cut down on cooking time!

Who was it who made themselves two slices of (reduced wholewheat and wholegrain) toast and left the second one under the grill to keep warm while eating the first one...

..and found that second slice three days later?

Still doing pretty well - 3 throwaways so far this month.

Pot of cream, bought to use up some other things, then the last 1/3 of pot forgotten about - c.22p
2 crumpets bought from M&S reduced, frozen, defrosted, ate 4 they were horrid, last 2 left on side and went mouldy - oops - c.17p
2/3 of a loaf of reduced bread, similar freezing problem as above - need to remember to freeze bread products straight away or use straight away these had sat on side for a while before freezing & weren't nice once defrosted. - - 36p

So 75p for the whole of January so far - pretty pleased there.

So far I have had to throw out a couple of old crusts - this was bread that had been in the freezer and I went to use it today and it was not only soggy but smelt mouldy - it had to go. Normally I am very good with crusts as I keep them in a box in the freezer (I make sure they are thoroughly dry first) and use them to make bread pudding or crumbs.

One of the best meals I made when I was so skint I had no money to buy food was fridge forage soup - I had spent my last £7 on a slow cooker and looked to see what I had. I made soup using a couple of old carrots (black mouldy bits cut off), 3 old wrinkly supermarket tomatoes, a chopped onion, a handful of pearl barley, water, a stock cube and some herbs and black pepper. I then remembered I had a hand blender and blended the soup after it had been cooked, it was delicious and leftovers went into the freezer - I had a bowl of it last night and it was still delicious.:D

Ok not a bad couple of days, got some left over chicken from sunday tea thats not been eaten (was going to be leftovers last night-but the general vote was for a chinese on chinese new year lol). Going to bang that in the freezer now for another day-meat in one nag, stripped bones in another for stock.
Made a stale/ends of loaf bread and butter pudding on the same day (any other end have become breadcrumbs-how long do these keep?, do I need to freeze them). OH and I will finish off the left over pudding tonight with a nice brew once the kids are in bed.

Had a bit of a problem with some jelly. OH had got a couple of packs of reduced to 5p fruit selections from Mr A's so I threw some in with my jelly. Now I have learnt fresh pineapple stops jelly setting doh!

Found a tip on the internet, so fished out the fruit-some got eaten some had to be thrown so say 2P. Heated the juice to just boiling (not a hard rolling boil, just starting to bubble and steaming away. I let it cool in the pan for about 5 mins then stired in a packet of gelatine (I had a pack with some left in from making stuff at crimbo so free lol).

Chilled it down and hurrah, kids are eating jelly as we speak.
