This thread is certainly helping me, M0rrisons were selling large baps with seeds & nuts for 49p for 4. Some of the seeds & nuts came off in the bag & when slicing. So I saved them up and put them on my breakfast this morning:rotfl:GC - Oct £36.17/£31

I haven't posted on this thread before but avid reader. I'm clearing out my cupboard where I keep all the sauces, spices etc. I have an unoped packet of madras curry kit spice from 2010, will it be ok to use? ooh I've also come accross 2 half used drinking chocolates from 2011, one in a tub, one in a jar, will they be ok to use or not?0

I would!! If it is unopened, it is unlikely to have lost too much of it's flavour.....just give it a sniff to make sure it doesn't smell musty...if it doesn't, it should be good to go!
Have checked the fridge....just some sweetcorn in a bowl....they can't remember when they put it in there thoughas it's possibly up to a week or more old, I will have to cave and chuck it...
They assure me that nothing has been thrown away, none have them have eaten here much this week as they have been at parties, friends etc so DH has only cooked when they have been here and had LO for the rest of the time :T He seems to have grasped this :j
Anyhoo.....declaring total for Jan to date is probably about 35p......expensive for about a quarter or so of a tin, but organic sweetcorn  :rotfl:Mortgage 12.12.12 £55842 12.12.13 £42716 14.12.14 £28837 13.12.15 £25913

Hi
I haven't posted on this thread before, but would love to join. Hope it's ok to join.
We have a food bin that get's collected with our rubbish ever week. Sometimes it is embarrassing what I throw out - especially after Christmas. It's such a waste of food as well as money.

Hi Jarus, welcome to the thread.
I have to declare some more chuck-outs. Some leftover cabbage and coleslaw and a hunk of home made bread.
I'm counting as 40p in total, so for the month now £1.25...
On the plus side I've worked out we have enough fresh stuff to last til next weekend, so only need milk this weekend!
Am starting to declutter too....0 -
Well. Went shopping at Asd@ today, all very mse etc until OH dropped my eggs! Thankfully only two broke and I salvaged as much of them as I could into a box in the fridge. My mother assures me that they'll be fine for breakfast tomorrow. Before this thread they would have gone in the bin without further thought, but I was very aware that they were 20p each.Ninja Saving Turtle0

Same here. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the stuff that needs to be used up rather than thrown out.
I'm trying to reduce what I buy in the first place so I don't have as much stuff to use. Also trying to make sure I use all the leftovers we do have. Sometimes I struggle to think of things to do with food I need to use up but after reading all your great ideas it doesn't seem so daunting now so THANK YOU!:T
I have half a jar of sundried tomatoes in olive oil which have been lurking in the fridge for a few weeks. Although the use by date has not passed it does say to use within 2 weeks of opening. Its way passed the 2 weeks mark. They still look OK - should I use them?February 2021 GC £301.45 / £300.00

Just made an awesome chicken soup with my first ever batch of stock, and a tin of 3 bean salad which I had no idea what I was going to do with! It was really nice, surprised myself!
Still not added any more to the throw away total, and even scrounged half a loaf of bread from the OH's house as he wont get round to eating it before it goes stale0 -

I never manage to use these within 2 weeks, have sometimes kept them for 2 months and they have been fine. I open a jar to make sundried tomato bread, but as there are only 2 of us, there are enough for 4 loaves, so usually at least 4 weeks that is if I make a loaf weekly rather than fortnightly.
My daughter's partner, who is Turkish assures me that if something is in oil it can be kept for ever!!!! Not sure that I would trust this, but oil certainly seems to preserve left over tinned passata or tomatoes. Just pour about 1/2 inch on top.MSE Addiction, should come with a health warning:money:0
