January 2012 Grocery Challenge

Another NSD for me, I am finding it quite difficult to stay out of the shops. I love having a mooch around but then I end up spending on things I don't need.
I have to drive past a huge Mr T and L*dl about 6 times a day doing the school/nursery run and I am constantly trying to justify reasons that I should pop in and buy something even though I really don't need it.
The upside to staying out of shops is that my grocery spends have come right down this month by using what I already have in freezer and cupboards and only buying fresh veg, milk etc to make a meal.
Keep up the good work everyone.

Only a small spend here today - £2 on some bananas and razors for DH (I'm lucky, he's happy to use the cheap ones !)
Incidentally, we have a friday market in town every week with lots of different stalls. I checked out the fruit/veg stall and then when I popped into Mr S, compared the price on a lb for lb basis. I was totally shocked !
1lb carrots off Mr Market Man were 80p - Sainsburys were 36p per lb
Parsnips, he was doing 2lb for £1.50 - Sainsburys were 70p per lb so not as bad as the carrots, but no better from the market.
Bananas he was selling a bunch of 3 or 4 for £1, but I got nearly 2kg for £1.34.
I thought markets were supposed to be cheaper and I'm all for helping the 'small man' but when prices are hiked up that much, I don't think they can really blame us for taking a wide berth !
Same problem for me as well. Last time I bought a small joint of beef from my local butcher, it was £20! Delicious, but I got double the size for half the price from a supermarket and was tasty as well.
I buy locally for quality and to support my community. I buy from the supermarket for price. And from M&S when I want a mix of both.0 -
avoided 'just nipping out for garlic' by remembering i had garlic powder in the cupboard to put in tonights slow cooker stew. NSD number 2Wins: 2008: £606.10 2009: £806.24 2010: £713.47 2011: 328.320

For those that are operating a second purse
Can you tell me do you count the items when you buy them from the super (discounted price) or do you add them into your totals when you get them from "your" store (full price)Debt Free Diary - Second Chances! Life in a Tourer........Debt free, building a savings pot0 -
Right, I've been very lazy at updating my spends, will get myself together!!
So far this week we have 'made do' with what we had in the cupboards etc. Apart from last night, I had a hellish day at work and was only in the mood for pizzaDH's eyes lit up with this suggestion, but rather than Domino's, I got 2 for £4 on the fresh MrA's pizza's. Bad me, but it could have been £20 :rotfl:
So, with lunches every day at work (which I think I will have to put a stop to) and dog food, pizza's etc, I have spent £16.72 this week :T
Going to go to MrT tomorrow and get in loads of tins and cans, and with what's in the freezer and what's in the cupboards already, I will be fine for next weeks dinners. Hoping for under £30 tomorrow! Can't think of anything smart to put here...0 -

I think the idea is you buy them from your monthly budget at the full price and pay that money into the second purse, so you build up more money to buy more stocks at cheaper prices.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -
Another £23.88 to add and I need to go back to the shops in a minute as I forgot dog food and a birthday card for DS1's friend  Maybe they'll have some good whoopsied
(got a whoopsies chicken today, reduced to £2.40 which is a bargain for my store, I arrived at just the right time!) I'll update sig after I know what the damage is with the new total

When you said totals do you mean what price they are added to your grocery challenge budget. If so I add the discounted price to the grocery challenge as that is the price I paid.
